Ophthalmic Technician 1

The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute has an exciting full time opportunity for an Ophthalmic Technician 1 (OT1) in Miami, Florida. The Ophthalmic Technician 1 (OT1) is competent in the theory, principles, and practice of eye care. The position performs appropriate clinical testing in compliance with department standards and documents in the EMR system.

Core Job Functions:

  • Provides support to providers which includes documentation in patient charts as required and directed for patient care.
  • Provides patient-centric care.
  • Adheres to University of Miami policies, standards, values, and required training.
  • Complies with regulations and maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Follows best practices of patient safety, hand hygiene, and infection control.
  • Attends educational courses for ophthalmic personnel when assigned.
  • Demonstrates high quality of work through accuracy, timeliness, professionalism, and thoroughness.
  • Meets daily productivity goals.
  • Ensures all equipment is calibrated and instrumentation is in proper working order.
  • Participates in assigned clinical research and maintains required certifications.
  • Organizes and stocks rooms for daily clinical activities.
  • Travels to satellite eye centers when necessary.
  • Works evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Performs organizational duties as assigned.
  • Completes IVI (intravitreal injection) prep for patients.
  • Facilitates motility exams.
  • Supports Virtual Care encounters and exams.
  • Performs and documents the following items in the electronic medical record:
    • Reason for visit
    • Tangent screen visual fields
    • Chief complaint
    • Basic ocular motility
    • History of present illness
    • Pupillary evaluation
    • Basic review of systems
    • Ocular surface assessment
    • Review systemic and ocular medications
    • Eye drop administration
    • Record allergies
    • Intraocular pressure such as Goldman, Tono-Pen, and I-Care
    • Pharmacy information
    • Pachymetry
    • Family, social, medical, and ocular history
    • Insertion and removal of hard & soft contact lenses
    • Visual acuity at distance and near
    • Color vision test
    • Lensometry
    • Stereopsis test
    • Manual refraction
    • Sensorimotor exam
    • Confrontational fields
    • Automated & manual perimetry
    • Humphrey visual fields
    • Virtual Reality (VR) visual fields
    • Amsler Grid visual fields

Qualifications:

  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent
  • Experience: 1 year of relevant experience

  • Displays basic knowledge of ocular anatomy, function, and motility.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform the appropriate patient workup using the EMR telehealth platform.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.

In addition to core job functions this position will require Saturday availability.
