Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be tentatively referred and selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the requirements at their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA policy.
  • Doctor of medicine or equivalent degree from an approved school.
  • Current, full, unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S., its territories, or the District of Columbia.
  • Residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification, in an accredited program.
  • Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited programs are eligible as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and appointed on an intermittent or fee basis, and are not considered independent practitioners.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements include moderate lifting, light carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, use of fingers, walking, standing, kneeling, bending, and vision and hearing requirements.

Duties

The James J. Peters VA Medical Center is recruiting for a full-time Primary Care Physician. The incumbent will be board-eligible or certified in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine, responsible for providing primary care to veterans at the medical center and its clinics. Responsibilities include team-based care, participating in quality improvement, supervising medical students and residents, and ensuring compliance with policies and standards.
