Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensure requirements may be tentatively referred and selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the requirements at their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.
Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, in accordance with VA Policy.
- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved school.
- Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the US.
- Residency Training: Completion of VA-approved residency in an accredited core specialty.
- Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited programs who meet other requirements are eligible as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs).
- PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee basis, not considered independent practitioners, and will not be privileged.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Preferred Experience: CME related to psychiatry, Board certification, Buprenorphine prescribing, enrollment in the VHA Clozapine Registry, and ability to use telemental health equipment are preferred.
Duties
- Provide psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation services.
- Conduct psychiatric assessments, including mental status evaluations.
- Order and evaluate diagnostic tests.
- Provide psychiatric on-call and Consultation-Liaison coverage.
- Prescribe medications, including Buprenorphine, Clozapine (if applicable), and medications for substance use disorders.
- Monitor patient progress, obtain consent, and carry out health promotion activities.
- Educate patients and families, document in CPRS, and perform suicide risk assessments.
- Perform delegated tasks and provide telehealth services as approved.
- Teach and supervise students, residents, and fellows.
