Library Building Custodian
DEFINITION
Position is responsible for maintenance of the Library building and grounds in order to provide safe, clean and accessible facility for patrons and staff. Position provides assistance to other library staff, patrons and community groups in the use of library facilities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various type of work that may be performed. Provides for the overall maintenance and repair of Library buildings and grounds; sweeps, washes and waxes floors; vacuums and spot cleans carpeting; dusts and polishes furniture; cleans and stocks restrooms; washes walls and windows; removes rubbish; and performs a variety of other custodial and maintenance duties as needed. Provides for security and safety in emergencies caused by weather, system failures, or unruly patrons. Provides assistance to other library staff, patrons and community groups in the use of library facilities. Transports books and other materials between departments; receives parcels and mails deliveries; unpacks materials and delivers them to the appropriate department; retrieves books from the outside book depository. Maintains grounds, mows lawn, rakes leaves, shovels snow, clears brush, removes litter, salts and sands walkways and raises and lowers flag. Maintains schedule of evening meetings; arranges furniture and equipment for meetings and events, cleans up after meetings and events. Opens and secures building; polices the building to ensure a secure environment for patrons and staff. Operates and maintains custodial and library tools and equipment. Performs minor plumbing and carpentry repairs including heating and condenser units, thermostats, pumps, oil burners, lights and timers. Schedules outside services and repairs as needed, monitoring work performed. Performs minor repairs to library equipment including copier, film projectors and security gates. Repairs, refinishes and assembles furnishings. Assists in unloading outside deliveries, receives boxes of donations. Maintains adequate inventory of supplies, orders supplies as needed and monitors expenditures to remain within budget restraints. Performs similar or related work as required. SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Under general supervision. The employee is familiar with the work routine and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently. The supervisor provides additional, specific instruction for new, difficult or unusual assignments, including suggested work methods. The employee shares unusual situations with the supervisor for advice and further instructions. ACCOUNTABILITY
The nature of work assures that errors are usually detected in succeeding operations. Consequences of errors, missed deadlines or poor judgment may include time loss caused by back checking by others and slowdowns in the processing of the work. Errors are generally confined to a single department, such as billing or accounting errors and/or failure to check a subordinate's performance. JUDGMENT
The work is well defined or has detailed rules, instructions and procedures. Judgment involves choosing the appropriate practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines to apply in each case. Must adapt to emergency situations. COMPLEXITY
The work consists of simple, routine or repetitive tasks and/or operations with few variations in well-known or established procedures. NATURE AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS
Relationships are primarily with co-workers and the public, involving frequent explanation, discussion or interpretation of practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines in order to render service, plan or coordinate work efforts, or resolve operating problems. Other regular contacts are with service recipients and employees of outside organizations. More than ordinary courtesy, tact and diplomacy may be required to resolve complaints or deal with hostile, uncooperative or uninformed persons. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School diploma or equivalent and three years of experience in general building and grounds care or a related field or any equivalent combination of education and experience required. Builder's license preferred. KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY AND SKILLS
Knowledge : Knowledge of techniques and equipment used in the routine maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds and equipment, including knowledge of heating and air conditioning, plumbing and electrical systems; knowledge of general landscaping. Must understand HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, audio-visual presentation and other facility related systems.
Abilities : Ability to work independently; operate tools and machinery; properly use power and hand tools; ability to use computer. Ability to understand, troubleshoot and correct HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, AV and other facility systems.
Skills : Communication, interpersonal and problem solving skills. WORK ENVIRONMENT
Working conditions involve exposure to intermittent machine or related noise or a combination of unpleasant elements such as odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt or grease. Includes work in library offices and public areas as well as outdoor conditions. Incumbent may be required to work beyond normal business hours in response to emergency situations. PHYSICAL, MOTOR AND VISUAL SKILLS
Physical Skills:
Work is typically in a library setting, involving sitting, with periods of stooping, walking and standing. Requires agility and physical strength. Work may require lifting heavy objects and carrying them (up to 50 lbs.), operating a hand truck, using power and manual snow removal and landscaping equipment.
Motor Skills:
Duties may involve assignments requiring application of hand and eye coordination with finger dexterity and motor coordination.
Visual Skills:
Visual demands require routinely reading documents for general understanding and analytical purposes; ability to manipulate hand tools and equipment.
Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent and three years of experience in general building and grounds care or a related field or any equivalent combination of education and experience required. Builder's license preferred. Special Requirements
