Job Objectives:

Provides technical expertise and manual skill in the inspection, servicing, and repair of the district's buildings, grounds, equipment, and furnishings. Performs routine housekeeping duties to protect and preserve the school building and furnishings. Maintains high standards to ensure that a safe and orderly environment is maintained for educational and recreational activities. Uses each contact with the public as an opportunity to promote a positive impression of the school district.

Minimum

• High school diploma or equivalent. Qualifications:

• Post-secondary technical/trade school graduate is preferred. Apprentice training, journeymen card, and/or license/certification in a trade is desirable. • Meets all mandated health requirements (e.g., a negative tuberculosis test, etc.). • Successful completion of a criminal background investigation. • Subject to pre-employment and ongoing random drug tests.

Ability to learn appropriate skills for the position. Ability to be self-directed and complete tasks independently. Ability to read instructions, measure, and mix housekeeping products. • Multi-school or closely related building maintenance experience is required. • Holds or is qualified to obtain a low pressure boiler, a class 1 water treatment, and/or pesticide application licenses. • Proficient in mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and masonry trades. • Ability to interpret and apply blueprint and schematic diagram information. • Ability to comply with building codes and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility guidelines. • Ability to comply with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and Public Employer Risk Reduction Act (PERRA) regulations. • Holds or is qualified to obtain an asbestos hazard evaluation specialist certificate. • Knowledge of computerized HVAC control systems. • Proficient in boiler operations and preventive maintenance procedures. • Valid driver's license and a good driving record. A current Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with a commercial truck endorsement is required.

CUSTODIAN Monitors normal building conditions during assigned working hours. Recognizes when problems may be developing (e.g., unusual odors, noises, leaks, etc.). Immediately reports suspected malfunctions and/or unsafe conditions. • Checks daily to find out if a school activity requires preparation or clean up. • Assumes responsibility for learning the proper procedures for all assigned duties. Receives written or verbal instructions. Carefully follows all directions. • Performs regular inspections to ensure that housekeeping equipment is in safe operating condition. • Maintains an inventory of essential housekeeping supplies. Anticipates needs and replenishes supplies to avoid interrupting the regular work schedule. Monitors and reports the effectiveness of housekeeping products. • Performs all housekeeping activities necessary to maintain safe and sanitary conditions. Enforces rules of good housekeeping. Provides for the regular and orderly removal of trash. • Completes assignments in-progress. Consults with the maintenance supervisor, head custodian, and/or the building principal to resolve scheduling conflicts and to ensure a timely response to staff requests. Avoids disrupting building activities except during emergencies. Keeps current with required reports. • Follows approved safety procedures to clean up accidents involving chemicals, solvents, blood, body fluids and/or body tissues. Participates in occupational safety and health in-service training as directed. class=WordSection2> • Deals with unexpected situations (e.g., ill children, spills, broken glass, etc.). • Sweeps, mops, strips, and waxes floors. Vacuums and power cleans carpets. Cleans and sanitizes toilet rooms, locker rooms, and showers. Empties and sanitizes trash containers. Resupplies toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, towels, and soap dispensers. Empties pencil sharpeners, removes cobwebs, cleans windows and mirrors. Washes chalkboards and trays. Dusts, cleans, and polishes furniture/woodwork on an as-needed basis. • Helps other custodians and/or maintenance staff address unexpected circumstances or pressing district needs as directed. • Cleans, moves, and arranges furnishings, supplies, and equipment as directed. • Anticipates and is prepared for fire, health, and safety inspections. Maintains clean, safe, and orderly work areas. Maintains clear routes to public exits to ensure the safe evacuation of the building. Escorts inspectors on tours as directed. • Complies with MSDS, AHERA, EPA, OSHA, PERRA regulations. Ensures that housekeeping supplies are labeled and safely stored. • Helps coach new and temporary employees in procedures to effectively accomplish their duties and the proper precautions to prevent injuries. • Immediately reports all accidents. Follows prescribed first aid policies and procedures. Promptly documents all accidents and injuries that require a medical referral. Implements recommended preventive safety measures. • Learns operating and maintenance procedures for all housekeeping equipment. Shares knowledge and skills with appropriate staff. • Helps prepare and maintain equipment inventories as directed. • Helps maintain the school grounds. Picks up trash. Removes graffiti. • Removes snow, ice, and debris along sidewalks to public entrances as directed. • Recommends procedures and equipment that enhance safety, contribute to effective building operations, improve productivity, and conserve district resources. • Replace all lights that can be reached with a six-foot ladder. • Reports damaged or missing safety equipment (e.g., equipment guards, ground fault protectors, fire extinguishers, alarm systems, signage, emergency lights, panic bars, etc.). • Helps with the management of building security. Refers visitors to the principal's office. Reports trespassers. Turns off lights and close windows. Ensures that the building and work areas are properly secured at the end of the work shift. • Opens, monitors, protects, and closes the building for district-sponsored or authorized community group activities as directed. • Strives to develop rapport with students, staff, parents, and the public. Responds to requests and complaints promptly and tactfully. Offers and accepts constructive suggestions diplomatically. Respects the personal confidences and privacy needs of individuals. • Reports student discipline problems, vandalism, or other related concerns to the head custodian and/or building principal. • Reports evidence of suspected child abuse as required by law. • Promotes a positive image of the housekeeping department. Maintains a clean neat appearance and wears appropriate work attire. • Participates in staff meetings and professional growth activities as directed. • Serves as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings. MAINTENANCE • Performs building security checks as directed. Monitors the performance of equipment. Immediately addresses malfunctions and/or unsafe conditions. • Checks daily with the head custodian to find out if a school activity requires preparation or clean up. • Performs activities necessary for the preservation and protection of district's property. Prepares boilers for annual inspections and summer shutdowns. • Helps the maintenance supervisor develop short and long range maintenance plans. • Helps evaluate work performed by outside contractors. • Ensures that all renovations conform to applicable building codes. Consults with the maintenance supervisor to ensure compliance with ADA accessibility standards. • Helps coach new and temporary employees in procedures to effectively accomplish their duties and the proper precautions to prevent injuries. • Immediately reports all accidents. Promptly documents all accidents and injuries that require a medical referral. Implements recommended preventive safety measures. • Performs a safety check of all equipment prior to use. Operates and maintains grounds keeping equipment (e.g., checks fluid levels, lubricates fittings, adjusts belts, inspects universal joints, tires, etc.). Prepares seasonal equipment for storage. • Perform routine duties to care for and preserve landscaped areas. Prepares athletic fields according to the conference/league and Ohio High School Athletic Association rules and regulations. • Picks up and delivers equipment, materials, and other supplies. • Helps the maintenance supervisor update snow emergency plans. Carries out snow removal activities as directed. • Immediately reports all traffic citations incurred during the performance of assigned duties to the maintenance supervisor. • Learns the operating and maintenance procedures for all maintenance equipment. Keeps current with advances in equipment technology.
