Hiring Range: $52,146.00 - $89,191.00

Regular Hours: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Summer Hours: 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. (Starting June 23rd - September 5th)

This position is devoted to maintaining and repairing City property, vehicles, roads and traffic systems, equipment and facilities, through the performance of semi-skilled and skilled labor and technical work. Incumbents provide specialized paraprofessional and skilled technical maintenance work that requires sufficient subject-matter knowledge and expertise in an assigned field to reconcile and verify the work of others; train others; serve as an escalation point for problem solving; coordinate processes; implement policies and procedures and provide technical assistance to higher level staff. Decision-making is limited to organizing tasks in more complex operational processes that include coordination of logistics and handling of unanticipated factors within standard policies and procedures to meet established goals. Incumbents perform highly technical maintenance work or lead work crews performing basic and complex labor, equipment operation, construction, maintenance, and/or repair tasks.

Responsible for ensuring daily activity logs and reports are correctly completed; assigning work; inspecting work; ensuring quality control; operating complex equipment; and performing the most complex of tasks related to the work assignment.

*** NOTE: The Public Works Street Maintenance division intends to hire Maintenance Specialist, Seniors, depending on the qualifications of the successful applicant(s). You must apply separately for the section specific posting to be considered for that position. ***

*** NOTE: Applicants will be required to complete a field assessment to evaluate their ability to proficiently operate a backhoe and excavator. Successful applicants will participate in a face-to-face interview and CMMS system assessment.

Duties/Responsibilities

Providing direct supervision to crews of Maintenance Assistants, Maintenance Technicians, Maintenance Technician, Seniors and Maintenance Specialists performing diverse and complex construction and maintenance functions in asphalt, concrete, stormwater, stormwater maintenance and street cleaning sections of the Street Maintenance division of the Public Works Department.

Must have the ability to safely and efficiently load/unload heavy equipment onto trailers and tow equipment to/from various jobsites and/or repair facilities.

Performing vehicle and equipment pre/post trip inspections; monitoring and replenishing fluids; performing basic corrective repairs

At a minimum must be proficient in the operation of: Backhoe and Excavator

Must be able to drive dump trucks on a regular basis.

Communicating work-related needs and issues to supervisors and senior management by providing updates regarding the status of open work orders and construction, maintenance and/or facility tasks

Knowledge of DOT traffic laws and requirements applicable to heavy equipment operation

Assisting with traffic control device installation and flagging operations for stationary and moving work zones and ensuring proper set up

Ensuring crew members are wearing proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when performing work to ensure safety

Performing inspections and implementing quality control measures for work performed by assigned crew

Performing manual labor on projects by assisting in excavation work by hand digging ditches and trenches; backfilling; compacting and leveling earth to required grade; construction landscaping

Proficiently utilize a laptop, desktop and/or tablet computer, Microsoft Word and Outlook programs is required

Ensuring employees receive operator training on a regular basis and documenting training in CMMS

Monitoring and documenting performance of those managed through performance management system

Daily calculating, tracking and accurate data entry of time, labor and materials for work performed in CMMS

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

High school diploma or GED equivalency.

Four (4) or more years of equipment operation/driving experience or technical maintenance experience related to assignment.

One (1) year of technical training in area of assignment.

CDL B driver’s license.

Additional Preferred Skills

Experience rebuilding manhole/basins, placing structures and cleaning of pipes and culverts.

Experience operating back hoe.

Proficiency in a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) such as City Works.

Knowledge and ability to utilize a laptop and tablet computer.

Ability to utilize communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public, and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Work requires functioning as a lead worker performing essentially the same work as those directed, and includes overseeing work quality, training, instructing, and scheduling work.

Experience working outdoors in various weather conditions.

Position designated as a Group 1, meaning it is critical to emergency operations and will report to work in spite of or because of an emergency or disaster event.

Subject to stand-by/recall and after hours' work and work during inclement weather.

Required to operate service truck and/or dump truck outfitted with plow during winter weather operations.
