(Part-Time) The Grove
JOB SUMMARY The Grove is 145 acres of ecologically diverse prairie grove land preserved and maintained by the Glenview Park District. The Grove was the home of horticulturist and educator, Dr. John Kennicott and his son, Robert Kennicott, Illinois's first naturalist. The Grove was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976 and a partner with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Chicago Wilderness. The Grove offers educational programs, special events and is open for regular visitation by the general public.
JOB DUTIES
Complete landscaping activities (planting, mowing, raking, mulching, etc.) Assist with landscape design planning Assist with planting of trees and plugs Regularly remove weeds from garden beds and pathways Identify and address potential pest and/or disease issues on plants Assist in irrigation and watering as needed Assist in plant selection and product sourcing while keeping up with annual budget Conduct basic maintenance on small engine equipment and hand tools Maintain trail safety and cleanliness as needed Perform all seasonal work assignments (snow removal, salting, etc.) Assist with special events and program setups during winter months
QUALIFICATIONS
Must be 18 years or older, with high school diploma or equivalent At least 3 years of relevant experience is desirable Good physical condition, sufficient strength, and mobility required Master Gardener or Horticulture certification preferred Basic knowledge of plant identification, local plant varieties, growth habits, and care requirements Some working knowledge of local ecosystems, native and invasive plant species and restoration techniques Attention to detail and ability to maintain a clean and organized workspace Familiarity with common gardening tools and techniques Ability to work efficiently either independently or as a team member Mechanical aptitude required, including the use of tools, equipment, and machinery Ability to read and follow manuals and operating instructions Ability to work a varied schedule including some weekends as required Ability to execute the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
SCHEDULING & PAY This is a part time, year-round position working a varied schedule. Schedule will include weekdays, evenings and some weekends as required. This position averages approximately 16 hours/week with seasonal variation. The target hiring range for this position is $18.00/hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
