Building Service Worker Intern Department of Campus Recreation

Job Summary Will be trained to perform all assigned custodial work and all assigned work in the conversion of the building from one setup to another, and all assigned work in the setup, moving and presentation of recreational activities, conferences, and other events in a large public event facility such as the ARC, CRCE and Ice Arena.

Duties & Responsibilities Custodial Work: • Learn to perform all custodial work required for the regular cleaning and upkeep of the building including floor care (wet/damp mopping, scrubbing, sweeping, vacuuming, and cleaning carpet). • Learn to perform dusting building furnishings; washing windows and other interior and exterior glass. • Learn to perform cleaning and servicing lavatories, toilet rooms, rest rooms, showers, and locker rooms. • Learn to perform emptying trash and removing cardboard for recycling. • Learn to perform snow removal from access areas; etc. Operate Equipment: • Learn to operate equipment, such as floor scrubbers, buffers, snow blowers, rug shampooer, and other equipment related to the maintenance and cleanliness of offices and public assembly areas. Maintenance and Cleaning Equipment: • Learn to inspect, care for, and clean all maintenance and cleaning equipment. Furniture and Equipment Moving: • Learn to move furniture, supplies, props or other materials and equipment, and assist in the unloading and loading of same to and from trucks as required. • Perform other related duties as assigned. Additional Physical Demands Physical Demands: Position involves lifting up to 50 pounds and operating heavy equipment such as: auto scrubbers and/or mechanical sweepers. Position involves performing routine area janitorial work and standing for duration of an 8-hour shift. Position involves exerting muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects, and bending, stretching, twisting, reaching, and standing for long periods of time. Position involves performing general physical activities that require considerable use of hands, arms, legs, and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, walking, stooping, handling, positioning, moving materials, and manipulating items. Position involves tolerating exposure to temperature extremes.

Working Conditions: Position involves working in varying temperatures during the season. Snow removal involves working in extremely cold conditions for short durations. Inside of buildings, or outside in case of washing windows, etc. In department areas where individuals are working, work must be performed without disturbing occupants, such as washing windows, moving, public function setups and daily janitor work. Occasionally must respond to emergencies, work unscheduled overtime, and perform last minute job order requests.

Knowledge of cleaning solutions and custodial methods. Ability to comprehend and follow oral instructions. Ability to read and follow written instructions, directions, labeling, and measurements. Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner. Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4502 - Building Service Worker position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 1/5/2025. Salary is commensurate with experience.
