Job Summary
This is work accurately reading water meters and assisting with the provision of customer service. Through on-the-job training, employees perform progressively responsible work locating and reading residential and commercial water meters on an assigned route. Employees use initiative in carrying-out recurring assignments Independently without specific instructions; however, unusual questions and requests are referred to the supervisor for assistance and instructions. The Field Services Technician Supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. Employees in this class respond to emergencies during non-duty hours and must be available for standby/on-call duty on a rotating schedule.

Read meters on an assigned route using a handheld computerized meter-reading unit; remove dirt, mud, and other debris from meter boxes In order to obtain accurate readings.
Conducts special readings as required.
Ensures that meters are functioning properly and reports any defective meters to the supervisor. Runs Re-checks on meters that have been questioned.
Disconnects service to delinquent customers.
May repair minor water leaks occurring at the meter.
Creates meter data logging files for signal malfunctions to meters to collectors and gateways Extensive knowledge of local geography
Drives a county vehicle along an assigned route and assures that the vehicle is properly maintained.
Turns on and off service for new or relocating customers.
Communicate with the public and coworkers regarding meter reading issues/concerns.
Additional Duties:
The employee In this classification may be expected to perform any related duties as required by proper authority.
Knowledge. Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of meter repair, testing, and installation procedures.
Knowledge of the care and operations of the tools and equipment used in meter reading and repair. Knowledge of the geography of Rockdale County.
Skill in operating a handheld meter-reading unit. Skill in the use of a variety of small tools. Skill in operating a computer and knowledge of basic software applications.
Skills in oral and written communication.
Skill in dealing with the general public.
Ability to record meter activity accurately and record readings legibly.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public.
Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, crouch, stoop, reach, and climb ladders in order to perform a wide variety of job tasks.
Ability to lift light objects and heavy objects (such as manhole covers) weighing In excess of 60 pounds. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse and sometimes irate, hostile, and threatening customers. Ability to distinguish between shades of .
Ability to see, talk, and hear in order to operate a motor vehicle, read meters, be aware of hazards in the field, and communicate with customers.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily outdoors with some time spent in an office. Employees are exposed to noise, fumes, dust, dirt, machinery with moving parts, dangerous animals (e.g., dogs, snakes, and rats), and occasional inclement weather.
Minimum
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
OR
a combination of education, training, and work experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Valid State of Georgia driver's license.
