NYSCI is a leader in the science museum field, recognized for its highly regarded exhibitions, programs, and products, all of which are informed by our inclusive, research-derived approach to STEM learning and engagement called Design, Make, Play. The defining characteristics of Design, Make, Play - open-ended exploration, imaginative learning, personal relevance, deep engagement, and delight - are the ingredients that invite broad participation in STEM and make engagement and learning irresistible. Through this transformative model for STEM exploration, NYSCI engages a broad community of learners in STEM by fostering the excitement of self-directed exploration and by tapping into the joy of learning intrinsic in young people's play. NYSCI has approximately 87 full-time and over 103 part-time and casual staff members.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The New York Hall of Science seeks a skilled Custodial Assistant to join its dedicated Facilities team. Custodial Assistants are responsible for maintaining cleanliness of buildings and grounds, ensuring an overall positive experience for visitors and staff. Custodial Assistants work under close supervision, performs work of ordinary difficulty in cleaning public buildings and their immediate grounds; performs related light labor duties; performs related work.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Examples of typical tasks, include:

Sweeps, damp mops, and wet mops office floors, toilets, corridors, lobbies and other assigned floor areas Cleans wash basins and other toilet room facilities Washes walls by hand with a brush or by using an electric machine Scrubs floors with an electric machine; waxes and polishes floors Hand scrubs stairs and stair landings Empties waste baskets and disposes of refuse Vacuums rugs and carpets Dusts, and removes and cleans Venetian blinds Performs shoulder high and high dusting of walls Polishes furniture and metal work Cleans mirrors and glass in bookcases and doors Washes electric light fixtures Replenishes bathroom supplies in toilets Sweeps sidewalks and removes snow from sidewalks; washes sidewalks and lower portions of buildings with brush and hose Replaces bulbs and fuses Attends a low-pressure heating plant May occasionally operate an elevator, move furniture or act as watch person Other related duties, and responsibilities, as assigned QUALIFICATIONS

There are no formal education or experience requirements PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Mobility: Must be able to move about the building to perform cleaning tasks, including standing, walking, and climbing stairs for extended periods Lifting: Ability to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds, such as trash bags, cleaning supplies, and equipment Manual Dexterity: Must be able to use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls, including operating cleaning machinery and equipment Reaching and Bending: Must be able to reach overhead and bend down to clean high and low areas, including windows, floors, and furniture BENEFITS
