SUMMARY
Verify the correct weight of each jockey at the time of weighing out and weighing in and report any discrepancies to the Stewards immediately.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Verify the presence of all jockeys in the room at the appointed time. Verify the all such jockeys have a current jockey's permit issue by the WV Racing Commission. Assist the jockey room custodian. Record all required data on the scale sheet and submit the data to the horsemen's bookkeeper at the end of each race day. Cause any overweight to be displayed immediately to the public and cause this information to be announced over the public address system by the announcer. Maintain the record of applicable winning races on all apprentice jockeys certificates. Release apprentice jockey certificates, upon the jockey's departure or upon the conclusion of the race meet. Use reasonable efforts to verify that safety equipment required to be worn by jockeys is worn. Daily record of incoming and outgoing foal papers, if needed. You will report directly to the Racing Secretary then to Manager of Racing.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Must have excellent communication skills, be polite, and present a neat appearance at all times. Must have knowledge of rules and regulations of Thoroughbred Racing. Must have knowledge of the WV Rules of Racing. Must have working knowledge of MS Office. Experience in thoroughbred horse racing environment is preferred. Office experience is preferred. Must be at least 18. Must be able to obtain and maintain appropriate licensing. Must be able to pass a background investigation.
EDUCATIONAL AND/OR EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred but not necessary.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
You will need to be able to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time. The ability to push, pull, kneel, twist, carry and lift up to 50 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Will be exposed to working in a noisy, smoke/secondary smoke environment and seasonal elements.
