JOB INFORMATION See NOTE(S) below for future wage increases and/or additional compensation opportunities.

Communications Technician positions assemble, install, maintain, adjust, evaluate, troubleshoot, and repair mobile, portable, and fixed land mobile radio communication equipment and systems; maintain digital microwave backbone infrastructure, VHF radio communications, 800MHz trunk radio communications, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), 700MHz (P25) Trunked Radio System, and radio control dispatch consoles with CAD capability; diagnose and repair defective components and subassemblies using test equipment such as combination meters, frequency/deviation monitors and counters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, and RF Watt meters; locate and clear radio interference; prepare equipment replacement schedules; requisition equipment, parts, tools, and materials; estimate costs; assist with scope of work documents; train apprentices and less experienced staff; maintain records; provide reports; prepare schematics and interconnection diagrams; install and repair industrial electronic equipment; work on a standby call out rotation; and perform other duties as assigned. NOTES: The following special salary wage increase is also scheduled to take effect for Communication Technician: 5% effective 1/1/26 Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EXPERIENCE/TRAINING: You must meet ONE of the following options:

Four years of full-time journey-level experience in communications electronics, which MUST include two years of troubleshooting and repair experience at the component level. Associate's Degree in Electronics Technology AND two years of full-time journey-level experience troubleshooting and repairing communications electronics at the component level. Successful completion of a state-accredited four-year Communications Technician Apprenticeship Program. Any combination of experience and training as specified above equaling four years, which MUST include two years of full-time journey-level experience troubleshooting and repairing communications electronics at the component level. NOTE:

City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered. LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.

HIGHLY DESIRABLE:

Possession of a valid Federal Communications Commission (FCC) General Radiotelephone Operator License. Possession of a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification. Possession of an Alcatel-Lucent/Nokia Network Routing Specialist (NRS) certification. REQUIRED DOCUMENTS (MUST SUBMIT WITH APPLICATION):
