PAY RANGE - $24.85 - $35.43/hr - plus a comprehensive benefits package

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Performs maintenance work on large-scale municipal projects; performs directly related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform construction, repair, and maintenance duties in streets, sewers, water operations, sidewalks, bridges, and related common areas. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. This class is distinguished from the class of Public Services Worker III by the operation of specialized equipment associated with the completion of assigned maintenance duties. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City employees and the public. The principal duties of this class are performed in an outdoor work environment with potential personal hazards. A Public Services Worker may be asked to work in the either the Streets or Sewer Division within the Highway Department, or within the Water Department.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL WORK: Performs sewer construction, maintenance, and repair functions, including breaking out concrete, building forms for new inlets, cleaning sewers using hand devices, slushing sewers with high pressure hoses, digging ditches and trenches, laying pipe and new sanitary and storm sewer lines, filling in holes, and caulking and constructing concrete forms for concrete manholes and spillways; Performs street construction, maintenance, and repair functions, including raking asphalt to provide an even thickness, tamping and finishing, paving holes with asphalt, operating rollers, spreading and tamping gravel, digging, and resetting manhole covers and related equipment; Operates air hammer, mudjacks and related equipment to drill and bore holes through asphalt gravel, ledge, cement, frost, and related; Performs water systems construction, maintenance, and repair functions, including laying water mains, digging trenches, installing water valves, installing water main taps and service taps, cutting pipe, cleaning and lining old mains, and installing and repairing fire hydrants, (including snow removal on fire hydrants); Sets curbs, grading, backfilling with cement, filling joints, and related; Re-routes traffic patterns to ensure safety of City personnel, outside contractors, and related with a minimal impact to traffic routes; Loads and unloads trucks, drives trucks and other related motorized equipment as necessary; Operates pavers, rakers, graders, sidewalk tractors, plate compactors, and asphalt rollers; Cuts brush and clears right-of-way; Plows, sands, and salts streets; Removes snow from sidewalks and common areas; Performs physical duties associated with natural disasters and other emergencies; Provides guidance and demonstrations to new employees in similar positions; Keeps supervisors informed of work progress, issues, and potential solutions; Attends meetings and training to stay current on relevant practices and developments; Responds to citizen inquiries courteously and promptly; Coordinates regularly with others to enhance interdepartmental efficiency; and Performs additional duties as required by the classification. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of streets, sewer, and water construction, maintenance, and repair activities; Thorough knowledge of all safety procedures and practices as applied to civil construction projects; Skill in the construction and maintenance of municipal water, sewer, and streets operations; Ability to train, supervise, and coordinate the work of others; Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language; Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions; Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions; Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines; Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology; Integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks. ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

Graduation from High School or possession of a GED; and Three to five years of experience in water, streets, and/or sewer construction; or Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work. REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

On call status; Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B), (must obtain within six months of date of hire - Water Works only). ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to understand department and safety rules and regulations and work around high traffic areas; Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to work safely in heavy traffic and heavy equipment operation; Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to turn, reach and grasp repetitively; Sufficient strength and endurance, with or without reasonable accommodation to lift, carry and move objects, through a full range of motion, up to 10 pounds occasionally, 5 pounds frequently and 2 pounds consistently; Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to work in trenches, in rough terrain and access construction equipment and to be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, stand, walk, push, pull, climb, and grasp repetitively throughout various locations in the city.
