Principal duties and responsibilities include: assisting in moving and positioning patients for surgery, assisting the surgeon in draping of the patient, retracting tissue and exposing the operating field area during the operative procedure, clamping and tying vessels to control bleeding during surgical entry, keeping the operative site dry, affording the surgeon the best possible exposure of the anatomy incident to the operation, assisting the surgeon in identifying any structure which should not be ligated and keeping these structures from the moves of the surgeon, assisting in closure of the incision including tying off bleeders, applying sutures and wound dressing and performing any and all tasks required of him/her by the surgeon incident to the particular procedure, practicing correct operating room etiquette, complying with all relevant statutes, regulations, and institutional policies pertaining to the role of the first assistant, applying principles of asepsis and infection control knowledgeably and skillfully, recognizing potential emergency situations or surgical hazards and initiating preventative or corrective measures in a timely manner, performing proficiently and calmly in all emergencies, working effectively and in harmony as part of the operative team, and having a thorough understanding of appropriate instruments pertinent to the surgical case. Qualifications include: Basic Cardiac Life Support and (CSFA) Certified Surgical First Assistant.
