The Department of Public Works is recruiting for one full-time Maintenance Worker to work on the Urban Forestry Crew. Falls Church takes great pride in its trees and green spaces. The City of Falls Church has the honor of being a Tree City USA, as designated by the Arbor Day Foundation and has received the recognition 42 years in a row! The distinction honors the city's commitment to community forestry. In fact, the City was the first community in Virginia to be recognized as a Tree City and has the longest state record for this annual award.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform pruning, trimming, and removing trees, sometimes aerially, from public areas such as City property, streets, parks and playgrounds;
Perform planting, pruning, irrigation, weeding, and mulching of trees, shrubs and perennials on City-owned property;
New installation and routine maintenance of ornamental beds;
Operate trucks, bucket trucks, tractors, back-hoe, chainsaws, tree/brush chippers, and other equipment in connection with assigned tasks;
Emergency over time work as required;
Snow removal as required;
Performs other tasks as assigned.
MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS:
Team-oriented and able to work well with others.
Experience in outdoor manual labor;
Experience with aerial lifts, rope rigging, and climbing techniques per industry standards;
Able to perform manual labor outdoors for extended periods in potentially adverse weather conditions;
Ability to follow oral instructions and communicate with crew team members;
Work requires exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently and up to 20 pounds of force constantly. Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, reaching kneeling, crouching, crawling, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B with airbrakes certification
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
This position is considered emergency service personnel; individual selected is required, as a condition of employment, to be available to respond to emergencies. Individual will also be required to be part of a regular on-call rotation.
SALARY:
$50,000 - $60,000 depending on qualifications.
This is a full time position with all City benefits. Benefits package includes pension plan, health insurance, dental insurance, deferred compensation plan, flexible spending account, college savings plan, life and long-term insurance, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, credit union membership, free parking, and more. HOURS:
7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, plus overtime emergency hours as required.
