Description Performs unskilled and semi-skilled trades work, which often involves heavy manual labor and the use of acquired skills. Other duties as required. This is routine work involving the use of some skills acquired by experience or on-the-job instruction. Work requires more than usual physical strength and endurance. An employee in this class normally works under the supervision of a technical supervisor who issues oral or written work orders and inspects work frequently.
Essential Job Functions (Parks & Recreation - dependent upon division assigned to) Rakes leaves, hoes and weeds flower beds and trims and prunes trees; Maintains and installs landscape shrubbery, plants and trees using hand tools, spreads mulch and applies fertilizers; Maintains athletic turf; Works with galvanized and PVC pipe, irrigation heads, and valves; Performs minor electrical, carpentry, plumbing, masonry and some mechanical repairs on buildings, structures and equipment; Paints equipment and buildings; Sharpens tools and makes minor repairs to equipment; Maintains and marks playing fields. Equipment Used/Job Location: Works outdoors in varying weather conditions; Operates small lawn mowers, weed-eaters, edger, hedge trimmers and other small gasoline powered equipment; Lifts and drags heavy objects; Uses hand and power tools and equipment; Reaches, stretches, bends, stoops, twists and climbs ladder; May operate vehicles, including heavy equipment. May be required to lift railroad ties, fertilizer bags, full trash containers, plant containers, small trees; May be required to load hand mowers and edger in trucks; May be required to shovel dirt, dig, pry; May be required to climb ladders; Performs basic plumbing and pipefitting tasks; Changes light bulbs, switches, ballasts, timer motors and does basic electrical work; Does related work as required. Minimum Requirements High School Diploma or GED; and some experience in performing unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance and construction tasks.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License Skills Some knowledge of a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and manual tasks; Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; Ability to read and write; Ability to climb ladders; Ability to use hand and power tools; Must be able to tolerate dusty conditions, full sun exposure, contact with sawdust, lubricating fluids, grass clippings and other such irritating and hazardous materials normally found in an outdoor environment; Must be able to tolerate contact with insects such as fire ants, bees and other insects commonly associated with lawns and trees; Willingness to perform heavy manual work for an extended period under varying climatic conditions; Ability to drive a truck and heavy equipment; Ability to read, write, and understand assignments in English.
