As the Director of Student Life for the Alabama School for the Blind (ASB), you will be responsible for working in partnership with other departments at ASB, AIDB units, etc. The Director of Student Life here at ASB plans, directs, and administers all aspects of the ASB Student Life department in collaboration with the ASB Leadership Team (Principal and other directors) in promoting academic, social, emotional, and life planning growth for residential students. ASB is committed to meeting our students where they are. The right candidate for this job will have a passion for working with students and colleagues to ensure all students receive an excellent residential experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor's Degree in Education, Special Education, or Counseling from an accredited college or university.
• Minimum five (5) years of experience working directly with students in school and/or residential settings.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Master's Degree in Education, Special Education, or Counseling from an accredited college or university.
• Experience working with students who are blind or visually impaired.
• Three (3) years of experience in school administration.
• Experience and/or knowledge of AIDB's student life programs.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
• Must be certified in visual impairment or must obtain a Master's Degree or certification in visual impairment within thirty-six (36) months of employment.
• Must demonstrate competency in reading and writing Braille by scoring 80% or better on the AIDB Braille skills assessment Inventory within the first eighteen (18) months of employment.
• Ensure incorporation of the Expanded Core Curriculum in all residential activities.
• Provide administrative leadership to the faculty and staff assigned to the program unit.
• Provide leadership in coordination with ASB Management Team to maintain a plan for continuous improvement as part of the AIDB Strategic Plan, Accreditation (COGNIA and AER), etc.
• Works to support the AIDB mission in alignment with organizational priorities and the AIDB Strategic Plan
• Constantly review the effectiveness and performance of each member of his/her staff. Assist and direct staff members in professional and personal development and improvement where needed. Complete performance evaluations on all staff.
• Determine and prioritize departmental needs related to equipment, supplies, materials, etc.
• Oversee enforcement of ASB policies and documentation of Student Life incident reports and disciplinary actions in Student Life.
• Assist in planning, organizing, and implementing in-service training schedules for ASB residential program.
• Must possess knowledge of federal and state statutes and laws concerning educational administration and programming, particularly as they relate to individuals who have multiple disabilities.
• Develop student life advisors' work schedules and reassign staff as needed to maintain a safe environment.
• Set up and lead ASB Student Life meetings for employees of the unit to increase professional development and knowledge of Student Life in supporting students' independent living, and academic and social skills.
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule to accommodate student and staff needs including; nights, weekends, first, second and third shifts.
• Supervise the planning of recreational activities (through the recreation staff) as well as intramural activities and ensure information regarding upcoming activities or planning of activities are communicated to the principal.
• Evaluate accountability procedures for day, weekend, and closed weekend student care and transportation. Provide oversight for closed weekend tasks.
• Assist in ensuring the periodic fire, tornado drills, and other safety drills are conducted according to AIDB policy.
• Plan for and monitor the most effective use and care of residential materials, supplies, equipment, building, and grounds, and take inventory of equipment and supplies.
• Manage the residential budget in a fiscally responsible manner and keep accurate records. Verify and sign residential payroll.
• During special events, the Student Life Director will be on duty or required to be present on campus unless released from responsibility by the principal.
• Must be available to respond to all campus-wide and building crises.
• Work with campus security on an ongoing basis; serves as essential personnel and respond to emergencies according to AIDB procedures.
• With the supervision of the principal; develop, supervise, and oversee ASB Summer Camps.
• Along with the principal, work with parents regarding sharing knowledge about Student Life programs, complaints, and concerns pertaining to the residential program.
