This job performs routine technical activities related to the upkeep, inspection, maintenance, and repair of the city's public works infrastructure and facilities. Work involves operating a range of medium and heavy equipment, including but not limited to city vehicles, machinery, and a variety of hand and power tools, assisting with special event and project construction requirements, and adhering to established safety policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Performs semi-skilled and general labor including but not limited to carpentry, painting, concrete work, and landscaping. Maintains, repairs, and installs sidewalks, road shoulders, asphalt/potholes, and street drainage conveyance systems. Orders materials and supplies as needed in conjunction with Lead Maintenance Worker. Maintains, repairs, and installs street signs, raised pavement markings and variable message boards. Prunes and plants trees and shrubs for various city projects and performs vegetation control in the city's rights-of-way. Monitors street, landscape, and drainage facilities to ensure maintenance contractors comply with city standards. Responds to weather event emergencies and natural disasters such as heavy rain, snow & ice, windstorms, earthquakes, downed trees, and flooding. Responds, as assigned, to accidents and Public Works/Parks emergency situations assisting with securing scenes/sites and performing public hazard mitigation and traffic control. Operates light and heavy-duty equipment such as dump and flatbed trucks, front-end loaders, backhoes, and excavators, and uses a variety of gas & electric-powered equipment and tools. Maintains, repairs, and inspects all maintenance tools, equipment, vehicles, and trailers. Monitors assigned city vehicle/s for preventive maintenance schedules and necessary repairs; records such activities per established procedures. Uses electronic/digital work order systems and timesheets to record activities and maintain pertinent records. Interacts with the public while performing field assignments; responds appropriately to questions, inquiries, and requests for directions. Shall be required to respond to emergency calls or arrive onsite in response to weather events and emergency situations, including on evenings and/or weekends, based on organizational responsibilities or requirements. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with those interacted with during work regardless of race, color, religious creed, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, genetic information, disability, political affiliation, military service, or diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. This position has no supervisory responsibilities. Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or GED; supplemented by two (2) years of directly related experience or experience in one of the following areas: streets maintenance, concrete construction, traffic control, landscape construction & maintenance, and stormwater systems maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience. Employees must be residents of Washington State.
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver License and the ability to drive a city-owned vehicle per established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines. Possession of a valid Washington State Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL), or the ability to obtain one within six (6) months of successfully completing probation, is required.
Must possess and maintain or obtain within one (1) year of hire, the following certifications: 24-hour HAZWOPER, Washington State Traffic Control Flagger First Aid CPR/AED. Additional Information

Procedures and techniques pertaining to right-of-way maintenance including concrete and asphalt drainage repairs and vegetation control. Methods of street, stormwater, sidewalk, sign, and marking maintenance and construction, including installation and repair. Operating and maintaining heavy equipment, fleet trucks, gas powered equipment and tools, and hand tools standard to construction and maintenance. Work hazards and the ability to follow established safety procedures and regulatory guidelines pertaining to the work. SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Complete work amidst competing priorities, stressful weather and traffic conditions, and emergency situations. Use of Microsoft Office Suite and applicable department/organization specific software and ability to learn and become skilled in the use of other specialized software and online meeting platforms shall be required. Clearly communicate and understand information in English, both orally and in writing, and use professional composition, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Responsive and flexible handling of work assignments and prioritizing work to complete assignments accurately and timely. Maintain a customer service orientation and positive image of the city to the public, courteous and professional approach to exchanging information, and adhere to strict confidentiality requirements.
