Summary Responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Major Job Functions
The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time: Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures Reports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures Reports results for stats, abnormals, critical values and other categories of special requests as defined by laboratory policy Documents special handling required for test results that meet outlying (established) criteria Reports trends and/or delays to Technical Specialist Performs appropriate quality control for the test procedure. Responsible for CAP, JCAHO, and other regulatory agency standards. Performs daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed, maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate. Troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur Notifies Technical Specialist when supplies, reagents, equipment are below established levels Follows established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions, safety, fire safety, disasters, exposure, blood borne and airborne pathogen, hazardous materials, and chain of custody procedures Follows established hospital policies for maintaining a professional, responsible, and courteous environment for patients, visitors and fellow employees Assists with orientation of laboratory procedures for students and/or new laboratory employees Performs phlebotomy (as required by position and location) as appropriate for patients requiring this procedure When requested, performs duties required to cover in Technical Specialist's absence Floats to other laboratory sites as workload requires and as scheduled MLTs with an associate degree in laboratory science or medical technology plus four years clinical experience may perform competency assessments for moderate and high complexity testing personnel Other duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications
The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:
Education and Formal Training :
Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology with appropriate clinical training in the testing of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and adult patients required, or have successfully completed at least a 50-week official US military medical laboratory procedures course and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician). MLT (ASCP) or MLT eligible under ASCP required Work Experience :
None Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required :
Appropriate clinical training in the testing of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients Possess skills for accepting responsibility, making decisions, and working as a team. Ability to operate equipment at sitting or standing levels. Flexibility and adaptability to work additional hours or shifts and under stress. Effective communications skills to include listening, writing, talking, and reading. Ability to communicate via telephone, LIS, email and verbally. Knowledge of laboratory functions and specimen requirements Physical Requirements:
Light lifting up to 25 pounds, general motion including bending, squatting, reaching, carrying, pushing and pulling Manual dexterity Ability to speak plainly Near visual acuity, ability to discern colors May involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material Communicates clearly, effectively, and intelligently Handles multiple priorities Independent decision making and able to make decisions under pressure Manages stress, anger, fear, and hostility Works alone and with others effectively Works in close proximity to others or in a distracting environment
