Position Summary
The mission of the Saint Nicholas Center for Faith and Justice (SNCFJ) at Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS) is to support the formation of Christian leaders as faithful and effective advocates for justice in the way of Jesus. The Program Coordinator of the Center enables this mission by collaborating with the Director to administer programmatic activities, to manage Center calendar, finances, and business processes, and to coordinate with partners within and beyond VTS.
Essential Functions
Administer Center activities
Assist the Director with visioning and planning all programming, including welcoming new students in August, major annual lectures and scholarly convenings, Faith and Justice lunches, civil rights pilgrimages, the annual Justice Praxis Seminar, and other programming as assigned. Lead the logistics for events and programming including room scheduling and set up, refreshments/catering, signage, and guest room requests. Manage hospitality (guest room reservations, meal tickets, reimbursements, etc.) for visiting fellows and other guests of the Center. Maintain and edit the Center’s online presence including related pages on the VTS website and social media. Oversee the creation, production, and distribution of printed and digital material promoting the Center. Coordinate the annual alumni award. Maintain an email list-serve for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members interested in Center activities.
Manage Center calendar, finances, and business processes
Prepare an annual calendar of Center events for current seminarians, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members. Draft agenda, itineraries, minutes, reports, emails, letters, and other documents. Maintain and edit internal communications regarding Center activities including opportunities for student mini-grants. Assist the Director with the annual budgeting process. Submit and track procurement requests and expense reports. Maintain a written record of business processes. Support Center student workers in maintaining a handbook.
Coordinate with partners within and beyond VTS
Liaise with VTS offices, especially Multicultural Ministries, the Center for Anglican Communion Studies, and the Dean’s Office, in coordinating programing focused on faith and justice. Represent the Center at staff meetings as requested. Liaise with community partners in the DC region and Northern Virginia, including Virginians Organized for Interfaith and Community Engagement (VOICE) and Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy (VICPP). Communicate opportunities for participation in community partner events with Center constituencies (seminarians, faculty, staff, alumni, community members). Strengthen ties between the Center and faith and justice efforts nationally and in the Episcopal Church.
Other Duties
Perform other duties that arise for the sake of the Center, as approved by the Director.
Position Qualifications
Skills and Abilities
Strong desire to support the mission of the Center and of VTS. Excellent demonstrated judgment and diplomacy in working with diverse groups to address complex issues. Exceptional written, presentation, and verbal communication skills. Strong organizational skills, with the ability to attend to details. Ability to work pro-actively in completing a variety of projects and ability to work in a collaborative environment to accomplish shared goals
Education
Bachelor’s degree preferred
Experience
Knowledge of the Episcopal Church will be helpful but is not required. Familiarity with or willingness to learn about faith and justice activities in the DC region. Experience working with faith and justice campaigns or organizations is preferred.
Technology Skills
Excellent administrative skills including facility with Microsoft Office, knowledge of data base applications, and experience with web-based platforms (Asana, MailChimp, and Canva). Willingness to learn new skills.
Physical Demands
Stand, walk, sit, type, reach outward, reach above shoulders up to 8 hours/day. Lift 10lbs or less up to 0-2.5+ hours/day.
Work Environment
Work is performed primarily in office.
