New hires, re-hires, and internal hires will typically receive a starting salary between the posted minimum and the average pay of employees in their same classification. Offers will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience and qualifications and will thoughtfully consider internal pay equity for agency staff who perform similar duties and have similar qualifications. The top half of the posted salary range is generally reserved for candidates who exceed the requirements and qualifications for the role. The maximum salary range is reserved for candidates that far exceed the required and preferred qualifications for the role.
Position Overview:
The Division Director of School Improvement (SI) sets the strategy and vision for Texas’s school improvement and intervention work for identified low-performing districts and campuses and manages internal and external partners to effectively execute against this vision. The division director leads a team of campus support specialists and directors to support campuses in using Effective Schools Framework diagnostic data to develop targeted improvement plans and turnaround plans anchored in high impact research-based strategies (e.g., high quality instructional material, instructional leadership strategies), and then to coach principals and district leaders (particularly District Coordinators of School Improvement and annually, superintendents) toward strong fidelity of implementation of selected strategies based on data reflection and observations.
Given that school improvement is a substantial statewide effort in collaboration with all 20 regional service centers, multiple vendors, and the Center for Effective Schools at Region 13, the division director also drives yearlong training, communications, and effective collaboration with these key external parties to provide high impact capacity-building, support, and guidance to districts and campuses engaged in School Improvement. This is a cross-functional leadership role at the agency, with the division director often collaborating with governance, accountability, and program support teams to ensure that TEA is collectively delivering strong service and support to campuses and districts.
This position reports to Associate Commissioner of District Planning & Supports. As a member of the senior leadership team of the Department of District Planning & Supports (DPAS), the division director also frequently collaborates with fellow division directors to drive joint statewide strategy, continuously improve internal department approaches, and model and proactively build a positive, productive department culture.

Strategy, Vision, and Planning: Sets the vision, strategy, and goals for the key work of the SI division; Collaborates with team to build a strong plan to execute against the vision; Invests team in the broader change vision High Impact Campus Support: Manages a team to develop high quality targeted improvement plans and turnaround plans aligned to Effective Schools Framework diagnostic data and highest impact improvement strategies; conduct observations and collect key metrics to track fidelity of implementation of strategies; coach and develop campus principals and District Coordinators for School Improvement toward stronger fidelity of implementation; and track toward ultimately goal of progress/improvement made by the campuses identified as CSI and/or D/Fs based on state/federal accountability, as well as campuses meeting exit criteria External and Internal Partner Support, Collaboration, and Management: Lead team to deliver strong yearlong scope and sequence of training, communications, and collaboration with all 20 Regional Service Centers, key vendors, and Center for Effective Schools at Region 13; create aligned plans/goals and performance manage external partners effectively to meet collective school improvement outcomes. Lead collaborations with other TEA divisions to move forward collective goals, including but not limited to all DPAS divisions, System Support & Innovation division, Division of Authorizing, Department of Instructional Strategy, Governance, and Assessment & Accountability Effective Internal Systems and Operations: Manage a team toward effective, compliant, and impactful grant management, performance management, project management, and critical data and technology systems management Team Management and Supervision: Manages and coaches teammates effectively toward program outcomes and individual development goals and needs; fosters a positive, productive, and collaborative team culture
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university Experience: At least seven (7) years of experience working within or in collaboration with school districts, education service centers, and/or statewide education initiatives. This includes two (2) years of robust program management experience in the education sector; and two (2) years of experience in one or more of the following areas: facilitating high-quality professional development for LEA leadership and/or campus-level staff; coaching LEA leadership and/or campus-level staff; or providing consultation and strategic support to senior LEA leadership, such as Superintendents, Chief Academic Officers, or Chief Innovation Officers. Prior experience managing a team is required.
