NRDC is seeking a Senior Attorney to work with the Litigation Team in any of our U.S. offices. Position Summary The Senior Attorney litigates significant cases on behalf of NRDC and outside partners, leading case teams and supervising litigation work. This role also involves participating in team development and institutional work. This position is part of the bargaining unit represented by The Washington Baltimore News Guild (WBNG / The News Guild-CWA Local 32035). Responsibilities To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made for qualified individuals with disabilities: Active litigation and assistance with team litigation (~80-85%) Lead significant and complex cases, including large coalition cases, managing all aspects from development through briefing, hearings, and appeals. Model and teach excellence in litigation. Provide guidance to support staff and attorneys, fostering growth and development. Collaborate with NRDC’s experts to refine litigation strategies aligned with advocacy goals. Develop relationships with advocacy staff and outside allies to identify and develop litigation opportunities. Other team collaboration or institutional engagement (~15-20%) Mentor other litigating attorneys and paralegals, providing feedback and supporting career development. Contribute to the growth of the litigation capacity through committees, trainings, relationship-building, and outreach. The above duties are not exhaustive; other responsibilities may be assigned. Qualifications
Minimum Education & Experience: Admission to the state bar in the jurisdiction where the applicant intends to practice. At least 8 years of litigation experience, including record-review litigation. Experience leading case teams. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse social identities. Excellent legal writing, research, analysis, and oral advocacy skills. Ability to lead complex record-review cases and oversee all case aspects. Knowledge of environmental and administrative law and federal practice issues. Leadership and mentorship skills, fostering a culture of dignity and belonging. Willingness to travel occasionally (~10%). Commitment to public service, equity, and social justice.
