Job is comprised of clinical component and program development:
Clinical component: Counsel patients and families about genetic diseases, genetic testing procedures and test results; Evaluate patients and other family members in conjunction with medical director and other clinicians. Provide access to resources for medical interventions, grief counseling, and supportive follow-up as needed. Provide information to other pediatric subspecialties seeking genetic testing.
Program development: Work with the hospital/hospital laboratory to develop genetic testing program.
Responsibilities
Reviews patient records in anticipation of initial visit, investigate testing options, follow up testing result, provide result and genetic counseling, and follow up family testing based on patient results. Helps to develop genomic testing program. This program is designed to be a single resource for the hospital and outpatient providers who are seeking genetic or genomic testing for their patients. Assists with genetic counseling for metabolic and newborn screening program. Acts as a resource for other subspecialties seeking genetic or genomic testing in order to identify the most appropriate testing. Serve as educator and resource for staff, house staff, and other health care professionals. Reviews laboratory sendouts to identify most appropriate genomic testing based on analysis of risk, benefit and cost. Provide teaching to medical students, housestaff, others. Demonstrates support for the mission, vision, values, and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with CT Children’s standards. Basic Understanding of CT Children’s Policies and Procedures. Understanding of the organization’s environment of care.
Qualifications
Education and/or Experience Required:
Master of Science in Genetic Counseling required. Prior experience working as clinical or laboratory-based genetic counselor preferred, but new graduates will be considered.
License and/or Certification Required:
Board certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling or American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics is required; if not Board certified, as a condition of employment must achieve certification within one year of employment. Connecticut Genetic Counselor license is required within one year of employment. If not licensed, a Connecticut temporary Genetic Counselor permit is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge Of:
Technical and ethical aspects of genomic testing and ease with discussing these issues with patients and professionals. Comfort with billing and insurance systems. Knowledge about genetic aspects of newborn screening disorders.
Skills:
Advanced skills with Microsoft applications that may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access and other web-based applications. May produce complex documents, perform analysis and maintain databases.
Ability To:
Learn Epic, our electronic medical record, for documentation of patient visit and testing results.
