Job Description
UPMC Williamsport Laboratory is hiring a full-time Histotechnician to join our clinical team. This role offers a consistent 40-hour work week with rotating early morning shifts (5:00 AM–1:30 PM or 5:30 AM–2:00 PM), plus a monthly on-call rotation which includes weekends. \n \n We’re proud to offer a
$15,000 sign-on bonus for experienced Histotechnicians (1+ years)
and
$12,000 for those with less than 1 year of experience . In this essential position, you’ll process and prepare tissue samples using advanced histological techniques to support accurate diagnosis and patient care. \n \n Key Responsibilities: \n \n \n
Histology Workflow Expertise: Demonstrate full proficiency in CoPath software for managing histology workflows. \n \n \n
Sample Preparation & Processing: Accurately process surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, microtomy, staining, and coverslipping. Follow specialized protocols for minute biopsies and tissue orientation. \n \n \n
Quality Assurance: Perform quality control checks at each stage of tissue processing and staining to ensure optimal slide integrity—free of folds, chatter, artifacts, or floaters. \n \n \n
Slide Preparation: Use barcode labeling to maintain precise patient identification throughout the microtomy process. \n \n \n
Instrument Maintenance: Maintain lab instruments according to daily protocols and quality control standards. \n \n \n
Advanced Staining: Progress toward independent work in advanced staining areas, contributing to diagnostic excellence. \n \n \n
Supportive Tasks: Assist with ancillary duties such as filing, cleaning, and stocking supplies to maintain a smooth lab operation. \n \n \n
Academic Mission: Support the department’s academic initiatives and contribute to a culture of learning and innovation. \n \n
Education & Training: \n \n High school diploma or equivalent required. \n Completion of educational requirements to sit for the Histotechnician (HT) exam, including one of the following:\n \n Successful completion of a
NAACLS-accredited HT program
within the last 5 years,
OR \n An
Associate’s degree
or at least
60 semester hours
of academic credit from a regionally accredited
college/university,
including a minimum of
12 semester hours in biology and chemistry . \n \n \n \n
Experience: \n \n
One year of clinical laboratory experience
post-training is preferred but not required. \n \n \n Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances: \n \n
Histology Technician (HT) Certification
from the
American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
is required
within 18 months of hire .\n \n
Note:
Employees active in a Histotechnician role on or before
January 1, 2004 , are grandfathered and exempt from certification unless transferring to a new position that requires it. \n \n \n
New York State License
required for positions located in New York. \n
