Job Description Role Description Job Title : Manager, Automation Engineering Location : Columbus, OH or Kennesaw, GA Reports To : President Employment Type : Full-Time, on-site Position Summary The Manager of Automation Engineering will lead a team of engineers in the design, development, and deployment of automation systems for industrial customers. This role requires strong technical knowledge, leadership ability, and a customer-first mindset to deliver automation projects from concept through commissioning. Key Responsibilities Manage, mentor, and grow a team of automation and integration engineers. Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Set clear objectives, conduct performance reviews, and provide coaching. Allocate resources effectively to meet project milestones and organizational goals. Automation Design & Implementation Oversee the design and deployment of automation systems including PLCs, SCADA, HMI, robotics, and other control systems. Ensure seamless integration with customer equipment, software, and operations. Collaborate with the sales team to define technical specifications and scope for customer proposals. Project Management Lead automation projects end-to-end—from concept to commissioning—ensuring delivery within scope, budget, and timeline. Develop and manage detailed project schedules, budgets, and KPIs. Proactively identify risks and resolve technical issues during execution. Cross-Functional Collaboration Partner with Operations, IT, Manufacturing, and other departments to align automation strategies with business goals. Interface with vendors and suppliers for equipment sourcing, support, and other engineering services. Communicate progress and challenges clearly to stakeholders and leadership. Drive initiatives to improve system performance, reduce costs, and increase reliability. Stay informed of emerging technologies (e.g., IoT, AI, Industry 4.0) and implement best practices. Champion adoption of modern tools and methodologies to maintain a competitive edge. Compliance & Safety Ensure all systems meet applicable safety and regulatory standards (OSHA, ISO, etc.). Implement robust testing, validation, and documentation practices to ensure system quality and reliability. Provide technical support and troubleshooting for automation systems after deployment. Ensure smooth handoff to customer maintenance teams, including training and documentation. Respond to system performance issues and coordinate corrective actions. Maintain long-term customer satisfaction through timely, proactive check ins. Qualifications Education Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Automation, Robotics, or a related engineering discipline. Experience 10+ years in automation engineering, system integration, or related fields. 5+ years in a leadership role managing engineering teams. Proven track record of delivering complex automation systems. Technical Skills Proficient in PLC programming (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley), WMS systems, HMI design, and robotic systems. Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (Modbus, OPC, Ethernet/IP). Knowledge of software tools for automation design (e.g., AutoCAD, RoboDK). Soft Skills Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal abilities. Skilled in problem-solving, analytical thinking, and decision-making. Able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Work between office, lab, and customer facilities. Occasional travel to support implementations and vendor coordination. Flexible schedule with potential for overtime during critical project phases. Physical Requirements Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods in office and industrial environments Occasional lifting of equipment or tools up to 50 lbs. and heavier team lifting Manual dexterity to operate computers, tools, and testing equipment Visual acuity to inspect components and review technical drawings Must be able to safely navigate manufacturing and job site environments, including climbing ladders or entering confined spaces if required for installation support Competitive benefits package including: Health, dental, and vision insurance 401(k) with company match Paid time off and holidays Seniority level
