Avery is a trailblazer in developing transformative technologies to solve the world’s most pressing biological and industrial challenges.
We are building the world’s first fully automated genetic engineering platform—an end-to-end system that integrates novel semiconductor-based chips to scale the synthesis, assembly, and testing of genetic components in both cell-free and cellular environments. This unified platform bridges the digital and biological realms, enabling unprecedented speed and precision in bioengineering. Our mission is to revolutionize industries—from drug discovery and precision medicine to advanced materials and sustainable agriculture—by unlocking the full potential of programmable biology. If you're passionate about shaping the future of biotechnology and want to work at the cutting edge of science and engineering, we’d love to hear from you. Help us unlock and accelerate the engineering of life. Sr. Electromechanical Engineer Avery is seeking a highly skilled electromechanical engineer to join our instrumentation team in developing cutting-edge integrated systems. The ideal candidate will contribute to the design and development of both prototype R&D test platforms and finalized production-ready systems. This role involves ownership of CAD system design and the transition from concept to functional prototype. Responsibilities include detailed piece-part and assembly modeling using SolidWorks, along with the creation of comprehensive documentation. This is a hands-on engineering role, working closely with technicians to ensure system performance aligns with specifications. Success in this position requires creativity, technical versatility, and a broad understanding of multiple engineering disciplines. Collaboration is key—this role involves direct engagement with biologists and scientists to iteratively refine hardware designs and resolve challenges throughout the development process. Duties and Responsibilities This role requires a proactive, hands-on approach and the ability to transform bold ideas into functional, high-quality systems. A composed and professional demeanor is essential, along with the ability to remain focused, thoughtful, and effective under pressure. Lead the mechanical engineering design of integrated systems, including packaging mechanisms, enclosures, and electrical interfaces. Plan, design, fabricate, test, and analyze precision electromechanical and thermal control modules for Avery’s synthetic biology workstation. Apply advanced electro-mechanical design techniques in instrumentation development, including CAD layout of complex assemblies, microfluidic modules, and related hardware. Troubleshoot complex design and fabrication challenges, recommend and implement effective solutions, and provide periodic project updates and reviews. Collaborate with internal teams across biology, microfluidics, and manufacturing to co-develop instrumentation solutions and translate bench protocols into scalable platform designs. Oversee instrument testing, analyze performance data, and develop strategies to enhance reliability and functionality. Document fabrication methods, testing procedures, and results. Interface with external contractors and suppliers to develop tooling layouts, detailed parts, diagrams, and harnesses for prototype instrument manufacturing. Support internal teams in identifying project specifications and equipment requirements; assist in transitioning projects to in-house manufacturing or external OEM partners. Provide mentorship and guidance to engineers and technicians, and may supervise team members directly. Perform other related duties as assigned or required. Qualifications Requires at least 6 years relevant experience in mechanical engineering, new product development in life science instrumentation or medical products. Proven experience in developing complex laboratory instrumentation, diagnostic medical devices, microfluidics, or optical systems within the medical or life sciences field. Multi-disciplinary expertise across fluidics, optics, electronics, hardware, software, and systems integration for lab-based or medical platforms. Demonstrated track record of technical achievement in complex systems product development. Experience in commercializing new products from concept through design, integration testing, and rollout, with a focus on cost-effective manufacturability. Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams, clients, vendors, and stakeholders with varying levels of technical expertise. Strong proficiency in SolidWorks 3D modeling is required. Background in biomedical or laboratory instrumentation development is highly desirable; familiarity with laboratory automation is a plus. Knowledge of relevant safety and regulatory standards for laboratory instruments is preferred. Highly adaptable, self-directed, and capable of thriving in dynamic environments. Comfortable working in a fast-paced, rapidly growing startup setting. Strong verbal and written communication skills, along with solid computer proficiency. Proactive mindset with a strong sense of initiative and a commitment to continuous learning. Education Requires a minimum of 6 years relevant engineering experience with an M.S. degree; or at least 10 years of experience with a B.S. degree Working Conditions Under standard working conditions, this position is based in our San Diego, CA office.
