Senior Development Accountant GHJ Search and Staffing serves as the recruitment division of GHJ, a prominent national accounting and advisory firm. Our team provides qualified Accounting and Finance professionals on a temporary and permanent basis across a broad range of industries. GHJ's relationship with our Global Advisory and Accounting Network provides the resources needed to better understand client's needs, attract a higher caliber of candidates and assess candidate potential. We're working with a mission-driven real estate development organization seeking a Senior Development Accountant to support the financial operations of new construction, acquisition / rehab, and complex development projects. Reporting to the Accounting Manager, this role will focus on projects in active developmenthandling everything from predevelopment through construction close-out, reorgs, and refinancings. The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience with project accounting, strong working knowledge of construction financing, and comfort with GAAP. This is a great opportunity to join a collaborative, high-impact accounting team that partners closely with development and construction stakeholders. Key Responsibilities Prepare timely, GAAP-compliant financial statements and journal entries Perform detailed reconciliations for : prepaids, accruals, and debt / interest; fixed asset capitalization; project funding draws and cash receipts; insurance claims, pay apps, reserves, and intercompany transfers Review and approve AP entries; prepare internal wire and funding approvals Ensure accurate classification of construction and development transactions Lead monthly construction draws (internal and external sources) Set up draw budgets and mapping in collaboration with Project Managers Record and reconcile general contractor activity and retention accruals Maintain accurate tracking for capital contributions and equity payments Prepare year-end audit workbooks and financial packages Support cost audits for projects at completion Respond to auditor requests and manage documentation under manager guidance Support senior management and board reporting on : construction progress, intercompany lending, and placed-in-service milestones; predevelopment draw summaries and capital analysis Contribute to ad hoc financial reporting for external partners and funders What You'll Bring 5+ years of project accounting or real estate / construction accounting experience Strong understanding of GAAP; affordable housing or nonprofit experience a plus Excel proficiency (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, reconciliations) Proactive mindset and ability to thrive in a deadline-driven, team environment Excellent attention to detail and strong communication skills Affordable housing and / or HUD accounting experience is a huge plus 95,000 - $115,000 a year This is a meaningful opportunity to work at the intersection of finance and impact, helping deliver affordable and sustainable housing in communities that need it most.
