SMU is nonsectarian and committed to academic freedom and open inquiry. About the Position: This is an on-campus, in-person role. The Director leads risk financing, insurance, and claims strategies aligned with the Chief Risk Officer. Responsibilities include insurance procurement, claims resolution, risk data reporting, and contractual risk transfer. Collaboration with university partners ensures compliance and risk reduction. Essential Functions: Insurance Program Administration & Strategy:
Lead renewals, coverage evaluations, and actuarial assessments. Maintain relationships with brokers and carriers. Oversee certificates of insurance, bonds, and risk financing. Stay current on market trends and coordinate risk improvements. Claims Management:
Oversee claims functions including workers’ comp, liability, subrogation, and litigation. Analyze loss trends and develop policies. Manage TPAs and participate in mediations. Strategic Risk and Contractual Risk Management:
Maintain risk register, review contracts, and negotiate insurance requirements. Collaborate with Procurement and Legal. Risk Financing and Budget Management:
Lead actuarial reviews, monitor reserves, and analyze Total Cost of Risk. Contribute to budgeting and financial reporting. Risk Management Operations:
Lead initiatives on fleet, drone, and aircraft safety. Conduct risk assessments and develop risk appetite guidance. Risk Data and Reporting:
Oversee data governance, ensure timely reports, and maintain risk content online. Leadership:
Provide coaching and evaluate staff, fostering a strong risk management culture. Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree required; master’s preferred. Minimum of 7 years’ experience required. Certifications like AIC are desirable. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Experience with claims, insurance policies, and risk data systems. Strong communication, negotiation, analytical, and organizational skills. Proficiency in MS Office; familiarity with databases preferred. Ability to respond to incidents at any time.
