Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services. The Office of Archaeological Studies is a Division of New Mexico DCA and conducts archaeological research projects throughout New Mexico. Our mission is to identify, interpret, and share information about prehistoric and historic sites across the state. OAS serves other state agencies and private organizations that require archaeological studies as part of their development projects. The Archaeology Project Director at the Office of Archaeological Studies carries out client-initiated projects from conception through completion of reporting. The position aids in analysis of artifacts and supervises other archaeologists on staff. How does it get done? The project director designs, conducts, manages, and completes all types of archaeological field investigations including survey, monitoring, testing, and data recovery. Completes artifact analysis for at least one category for archaeological investigations they oversee and collaborates with other division staff to complete additional analyses, as needed. Produces technical reports on the results of archaeological fieldwork and laboratory analysis, ensures final curation and disposition of archaeological collections, participates in office administration and activities, including public outreach and education opportunities, and directly supervises at least two (2) employees. Who are the customers? This position serves private clients, state and federal agencies, Native American Tribes, and the general public. Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate has a Master's degree in Archaeology or Anthropology with four (4) years of Archaeology or Anthropology survey, excavation, analysis, and/or reporting experience; two (2) years of which must be supervisory. Must be listed or able to be listed on the SHPO Directory of Qualified Supervisory Personnel as a Principal Investigator/Project Director and be approved, or as such within one year, by the City of Santa Fe ARC for at least two (2) archaeological review districts and have a minimum of one (1) year of experience analyzing artifacts of at least one (1) category. Bachelor's degree in Archaeology or Anthropology and two (2) years of experience in archaeology survey, excavation, analysis, and/or reporting. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Employment Requirements Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Working Conditions Work is performed in the field and in an office setting. Late hours, weekends, on-call and callback work may be required. Travel throughout the state is required occasionally.
