Summary Description

The Mileu Specialist is responsible for assisting the site coordinator in day-to-day activities and coordination of services at Sterling Community Center. This role involves stepping in for other SCC staff as needed, including: working in kitchen/café, providing transportation for SCC participants, and providing peer support services (group and individual).

SPECIFIC DUTIES And RESPONSIBILITIES

Aid the Community Center Site Coordinator, including client transportation, facility maintenance, and event planning. Provide individual support and collaborative record keeping for 1-5 individual program participants. Co-Facilitate and provide facilitation coverage for Community Center groups, activities, and events. Assist in providing daily and irregular transportation of clients and participants. May include one evening per week and occasional weekend day groups and/or activities as arranged with Supervisor. Other related duties as required.

Key Responsibilities

Provide Peer Support and appropriate documentation for a support list of 4-8 SCC participants. Assist with daily operations, including kitchen/café and transportation. Ensure proper documentation and tracking of program deliverables. Collaborate with staff to plan to assist with programs and events at the site. Organize and maintain teams of participant volunteers to support in various areas of SCC operation (kitchen/café, groundskeeping). Assist Site Coordinator to maintain SCC facilities and grounds. Ensure SCC is properly supplied for weekly meal service, including picking up supplies at local vendors. Oversee SCC Food Pantry operations, including data tracking, and engaging with Pantry visitors.

Positive feedback and satisfaction from participants, staff, and partners. Compliance with organizational policies, procedures, and regulations. Effective cooperation with Site Coordinator. Timely, effective documentation of peer support services.

Requirements

New York Certified Peer Specialist (or willing/able to obtain certification within 6 months of employment). Knowledge of organizational policies, procedures, and relevant regulations. Strong organizational and time-management skills. Above-average interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively within a team and engage with the community. Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professionalism. The Milieu Specialist must have at least 2 years of experience in human services either as a staff member or a recipient of mental health services. Lived experience of recovery from mental health and/or substance use conditions is highly valued. Must possess strong organizational, and time management skills. Must be able to work independently, including making decisions to respond to immediate programmatic needs. Must also be flexible, respectful, creative and person-centered. Intermediate Computer knowledge is required. Must be reliable and able to work independently and understand the importance of maintaining confidentiality. The Milieu Specialist must have a valid Driver’s License and a driving record that is satisfactory to our insurance carrier. The Milieu Specialist must maintain current New York State Defensive Driving certification. The Milieu Specialist must be cleared by the NYS Justice Center through fingerprinting for a Criminal History Records search. The Milieu Specialist must be cleared by the NYS Office of Children and Family Services for instances of child abuse and/or neglect. The Milieu Specialist must be legally eligible to work in the United States.

Special Considerations

Employee may be sitting, performing computer work for extended periods of time. Employee may be required to independently lift up to 25lbs. Employee will be working in a building requiring stairs, without elevator access.

Mandated Reporter

This is a Mandated Reporter position. The NYS Justice Center legislation defines anyone who has regular and substantial contact with any person with special needs as a “custodian” under the law and, therefore, a mandated reporter. You can be held liable by both the civil and criminal legal systems for intentionally failing to make a report.
