POSITION SUMMARY

The Middle School Lead Program Leader is a key team member in the Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP) and/or After School Education and Safety (ASES) Program. This role extends beyond delivering daily programming by supporting the overall leadership of the site, mentoring and guiding Program Leaders, and ensuring smooth day-to-day operations.

The Lead provides academic support, enrichment, and physical activities in a safe and inclusive environment while also modeling professional behavior and reinforcing program goals. This position works closely with the Site Supervisor, school staff, families, and YMCA leadership to support a high-quality after-school experience for middle school students.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Program Delivery & Student Support

Leads assigned groups of students and ensures daily schedules are followed.

Facilitates academic support, enrichment activities, and physical play that are age-appropriate and engaging for middle school students.

Maintains consistent and positive supervision of all youth in the program.

Build strong relationships with students to support their personal growth and learning.

Leadership & Staff Support

Supports onboarding, mentoring, and peer coaching of new Program Leaders. Acts as the on-site point person in the absence of the Site Supervisor.

Assists with team check-ins, daily planning, and role modeling professionalism.

Provides feedback to team members under the direction of the Site Supervisor.

Helps identify and address site needs, student concerns, and scheduling adjustments.

Leads by example in upholding YMCA values and expectations across the team.

Qualifications

Required:

High school diploma or equivalent Must meet one of the following: 48 completed college semester units Associate degree or higher District-approved academic proficiency assessment Minimum 1 year of experience working with youth in recreation, education, or enrichment programs Ability to lead and engage youth ages 11–14 in a middle school setting Effective communication with students, staff, and families Team-oriented, dependable, and self-motivated Understanding of and commitment to the YMCA mission and core values Preferred: Previous leadership experience in youth programs Bilingual in Spanish and English Experience supporting staff or providing peer mentorship CERTIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS Must be at least 18 years old CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire) Live Scan clearance Negative TB test and completed pre-employment health screening Professional appearance in compliance with YMCA dress code (no altered uniforms or visible piercings in violation of policy)
