*Position Summary*
The Senior Estimator is responsible for evaluating construction documents, performing takeoffs, analyzing costs, and preparing accurate and competitive bids for utility and excavation projects. This role demands a proactive, technically skilled professional who can work independently and adapt quickly to changing demands, priorities, and scopes.
*Key Responsibilities*
* Analyze project plans, specs, and site conditions to produce detailed quantity takeoffs and cost estimates * Collaborate with project managers, engineers, vendors, and subcontractors to gather pricing and technical information * Organize and maintain bid files, historical cost data, and estimate breakdowns * Make timely and well-informed decisions to meet bid deadlines and internal review schedules * Prioritize tasks effectively and manage multiple active bids while maintaining accuracy and responsiveness * Continuously improve personal technical knowledge of underground utilities, excavation practices, and estimating tools/software * Learn on the fly and adapt to new technologies, project types, and client requirements * Participate in job handoffs, reviews, and post-project evaluations to support ongoing self-development and team improvement * Navigate ambiguity in project documents or scopes by asking the right questions, seeking clarity, and offering practical solutions
*What We’re Looking For*
We’re looking for someone who doesn’t just crunch numbers—they _understand the work_. You’re the kind of person who sees the big picture on a set of plans and immediately starts breaking it down into tasks, timelines, and cost. You’re motivated by action and results—you don’t wait to be told what to do, and you’re comfortable taking initiative when others are still asking questions.
You’re sharp, quick to learn, and able to process a lot of information without getting overwhelmed. Whether it’s a new piece of software, a project delivery method, or an unfamiliar spec section—you dive in, figure it out, and apply what you’ve learned to improve your work. You know that learning never stops in this industry, and you seek out ways to keep getting better at your craft.
Strong organization and time management are essential. You’ll often be juggling multiple bids, gathering input from the field, and coordinating with vendors—all on tight deadlines. You understand how to prioritize, manage ambiguity, and still deliver clean, accurate estimates without sacrificing attention to detail.
The best fit for this role is someone who’s naturally curious, decisive under pressure, and motivated to solve problems rather than pass them off. You should be comfortable in a collaborative environment, but also confident working independently when needed. You take pride in producing high-quality work that the team can trust.
If you’re looking for a challenge, enjoy variety in your day, and want to be part of a team that values real-world problem solvers—you’ll fit right in at Mr. Excavator.
*Qualifications*
* 3+ years of estimating experience in underground utilities, excavation, or heavy civil construction * Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., HCSS, B2W, HeavyBid) and Microsoft Excel * Strong math, technical reading, and spatial reasoning skills * Knowledge of local construction codes, materials, and market pricing * Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred, but not required * Valid driver’s license and ability to visit job sites as needed
*What We Offer*
* Competitive salary and bonus opportunities * Comprehensive benefits package (medical, dental, vision, 401(k), PTO) * Professional development and training support * A tight-knit team that values performance, learning, and mutual respect
