Summary: The Network Engineer reports directly to the CIO and will assist with design, implement and support the University network infrastructure. The position is responsible for providing design advise, implementation, operation, and support of Alabama A&M University's wired and wireless enterprise network. The position requires working in a team environment, including cross-functional activities, to solve complex problems and deploy new network designs to support the University's strategic plan. Assist in designing, purchasing, and configuring new equipment for network expansion. Researching new products and technologies network security / redundancy / performance. Monitor, troubleshoot and maintain voice and data networks (LAN, WAN, wireless and VoIP) devices such as phones, switches and routers. Excellent customer support skills as well as the ability to work in a team environment.
This is a regular, full-time, salaried, benefits-eligible position, and it is campus-based. The Network Engineer will participate in a rotating coverage schedule on university holidays, after hours and weekends.
Examples of Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Support of the enterprise network infrastructure, including core, data center, and edge routers, switches, and management platforms for those systems Planning and implementation of network changes during approved after-hours maintenance windows, supporting the integration of educational, administrative, and research applications Monitors overall network and specific network hardware performance and availability Provides tier 2 and 3 support to end users Follows all policies and change management procedures to ensure a solid network infrastructure Maintains technical proficiency by reading technical reference manuals and learning from colleagues Work with vendors and other IT employees when resolving problems; ability to research and troubleshoot technology problems specifically focused on networking Participates in and takes a leadership role in IT projects as needed Assist with Wi-Fi deployments, testing and hardware replacements, as well with network LAN/WAN. Interaction and management of Internet Service Providers and 3rd party vendors for escalations on hardware and software Work with Cloud & Infrastructure Team Participate in appropriate in-service and workshop programs and attend any required meetings Document internal processes and procedures related to duties and responsibilities Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. Typical Qualifications
Minimum Position Requirements (including certifications, licenses, etc.):
Master's Degree in Computer Science, equivalent work experience or IT related field and or equivalent work experience or related certificates. Three - five (3-5) years of experience in network administration and maintenance. Experience with both on-premises and cloud-based infrastructure (Fortigate, Palo Alto, VPN, Virtual Servers). Must be able to safely lift up to 75 pounds in support of hardware installations. Supplemental Information
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Experience with Juniper, Cisco, Aruba, and Mist networking and wireless systems (Apoghee) Knowledge of networking protocols (OSPF, BGP, 802.11, DHCP, etc.) Understanding of the OSI or TCP/IP model Good analytical skills Good communication skills, written and oral Willingness and aptitude to learn new skills, technologies and processes Ability to work as an individual contributor and as a team player Willingness to be flexible Ability to adapt as IT adjusts in its functionality Understanding of the University's goals and objectives
