Position Title: Academic Advisor
Time Type: Full time
Position Summary and Qualifications: The Academic Advisor for the Academic Records and Undergraduate Advising works collaboratively with faculty advisors and other campus partners to provide quality advising, registration assistance, and support to all undergraduate students. The Advisor plays a key role in onboarding transfers and first-year students to the university.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Help students to navigate and understand academic policies, curriculum requirements, and university procedures.
Provide guidance on course selection, development of an academic plan, and major/minor exploration.
Help students to prepare for registration and troubleshoot registration problems/issues.
Facilitate Registration Prep sessions for incoming first year students during New Student Orientation in June. Assist first-year students with registration and conduct reviews to ensure all new students have a complete and accurate schedule for their first semester at SJU.
Serve as a new transfer student advisor. Collaborate with the student's academic department and other campus partners to onboard new transfer students. Assist the student with registration for their first semester at SJU.
Advise visiting students and other populations who are enrolled in undergraduate courses. This includes special programs hosted by SJU (e.g., Diocesan Scholars Program) and international student programs (e.g., China Program).
Support the daily operations of the Registrar and Undergraduate Advising Office. This includes serving as a front-line responder to email questions, tickets, phone calls, and drop-ins, assisting with form processing at peak times, etc.
Collaborate with Student Success to support students who are experiencing academic difficulty. Make referrals to appropriate campus resources for academic and personal assistance.
Develop and maintain relationships with academic departments and faculty advisors. Serve as a resource for questions and assistance to resolve student problems.
Secondary Duties & Responsibilities: Support the operations of the Registrar and Undergraduate Advising Office as needed.
Participate in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Required: Bachelor's degree
A minimum of two years of experience in an educational setting
Demonstrated ability to work independently, organize and set priorities, and take initiative in a fast-paced environment.
Understanding of registration procedures and academic requirements.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and campus partners.
Demonstrated effectiveness in written and oral communication.
Proficiency in software packages (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.) used to create reports, presentations and brochures.
Preferred: Master's degree.
A minimum of two years in an academic advising setting.
Experience with Ellucian (formerly Sungard) Banner and DegreeWorks.
Experience with Starfish Student Retention Management System
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours: Some early morning or evening hours on occasion.
Some weekend hours as determined by the Director.
