Frederick County Government is providing health services in the school setting through a joint effort between Frederick County Public Schools and Frederick County Health Department. The School Health Services link health and education to ensure the success of every student in Frederick County. We are seeking positive and professional staff with a passion for caring for children to join our diverse School Health Services team. Position details: Non-exempt; full-time during the school year/approximately 10 months per year; 35 hours per week; Monday - Friday; full benefits. This position supports the School RN in the provision of a wide variety of professional health services to students, school staff, and, on occasion, community members in the school setting. Travel may be required for substitutions at other schools or for special assignments; school assignment is based on program needs. Supervision is received from an assigned School Health RN. Newly hired employees will attend a 6-week orientation and training at the Frederick County Health Department. The upper pay range reflects possible wage rates for internal County transfers and promotions, which are calculated per County policy. For external hires, offers are made at the base wage rate. Support the RN in conducting comprehensive nursing assessments by performing focused evaluations of recurring student health concerns Assist in the development and adjustment of individualized care plans to address student health needs Implement nursing care plans as directed by the RN, ensuring adherence to established protocols Conduct health assessments in collaboration with the RN, observing childrens developmental patterns, identifying potential health concerns, and performing state-mandated screenings (e.g., vision, hearing) Assist in developing and implementing student health plans, including communicating health status to parents and school personnel, initiating referrals, and recommending program modifications to better support student needs Administer medications and treatments as prescribed, monitor for side effects, and take appropriate follow-up action Support early detection, surveillance, and reporting of contagious diseases to prevent outbreaks Perform other related duties as needed To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Successful completion of an accredited school program for Licensed Practical Nursing Minimum 2 years of recent LPN work experience within the last 5 years Current LPN certification issued by the Maryland Board of Nursing Current certification in CPR and First Aid by a recognized certification body (e.g. American Red Cross, Heart Association, National Safety Council, etc.) or ability to be so certified during the orientation process Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Knowledge of the fundamental principles of nursing care and patient assessment Knowledge of State and federal health regulations for school-based nursing Knowledge of common pediatric health concerns, including chronic conditions and communicable diseases Knowledge of medication administration protocols, including side effect monitoring Knowledge of program assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation Knowledge and understanding of the legal aspects of LPN practice setting Knowledge of community health resources and referral pathways for student support Skill administering medications and treatments safely Strong clerical and record-keeping skills, including the ability to maintain detailed health records and documentation (electronic and paper) Ability to accurately perform basic math functions for accurate medication administration Familiarity with data entry, spreadsheets, and databases, along with competence in email communication, formatting, and file management Discretion and good judgment in working with sensitive and personal information with the ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality Strong and effective spoken and written (English) communication skills, including the ability to assist in the development and implementation of student health plans Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with persons of diverse educational, cultural, and economic backgrounds; co-workers, other health care professionals, students, and parents/guardians, and the general public Preference may be given for: LPN work experience in an educational setting Secondary language skills in Spanish Physical requirements/working conditions: While working in this position, the employee is frequently walk and stoop; occasionally climb, lift up to 50 pounds, reach, and perform repetitive motions; rarely push and pull up to and over 40 pounds. While working in this position, the employee is constantly working indoors; occasionally potentially exposed to infectious diseases and required to wear protective equipment; rarely working outdoors and walking on uneven ground. Employees are automatically enrolled in either the Uniformed Plan (5 year vesting) or the Non-Uniformed Plan (5 year vesting, effective 07/01/2024) depending upon position classification. The majority of support for the plan is provided by the County; however, employees are required to make a mandatory pre-tax contribution towards their benefit. Retirement benefits are payable at normal, early or delayed retirement. Retirement benefits are also payable upon termination and in the event of death or disability. Health Insurance: County employees have a choice of two medical insurance plans, an In-Network (HMO) Plan or a High Deductible medical plan with a Health Care Savings Account, to provide coverage for medical and surgical expenses, hospital and emergency care expenses, mental health expenses and prescription drugs.
