Maintenance Technician I
The City of Soldotna has an immediate opening for a regular full-time Maintenance Technician I. This position is open until filled with a first review of applications on July 22, 2025. The Parks & Recreation Maintenance Technician I position is an entry-level maintenance position responsible for the upkeep, maintenance and repair of Parks & Recreation Facilities and equipment. Under the general supervision of the Parks & Recreation Director or designee, this position performs a variety of semi-skilled work including general repairs, equipment upkeep, janitorial tasks, landscaping, and routine facility maintenance. Perform regular and recurring tasks related to the maintenance and operation of parks and recreation facilities and equipment. Operate vehicles and specialized equipment such as Zamboni, skid steer, lawn mowers, chain saws, ATV, snow plows, power tools and various hand tools. Assist with preventative maintenance of equipment. Perform general janitorial duties to include but not limited to sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping floors, emptying trash, cleaning windows, washing walls, cleaning locker rooms and restrooms. Perform minor interior building maintenance such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, and other unskilled and semi-skilled trades work. Assist with advanced repairs and projects. Assist with basic carpentry work in the construction and repair of a variety of wooden structures including fences, picnic tables, signs, outhouses and other projects. Prepare various areas of the facilities for different programing and facility uses including event equipment set-up. Conduct routine inspections of facilities and equipment and document issues. Frequent outdoor work and exposure to inclement weather and rigorous conditions including snow removal from sidewalks, parking lots, trails and the maintenance of outdoor ice skating facilities. Provides friendly customer service and works collaboratively with others to accomplish tasks. Provide guidance to seasonal laborer staff as necessary Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Basic understanding of facility maintenance and cleaning techniques. Ability to learn and understand basic carpentry, electrical systems, plumbing, mechanical systems, landscaping, and ice maintenance. Ability to perform heavy manual labor tasks indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Ability to operate basic hand tools, power equipment, office equipment, computers and willingness to learn basic audio-visual equipment operations and setup. Ability to effectively interact with the public and at times enforce park and recreation policies. Work independently with minimal supervision, multi-task, and prioritize work. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, contractors, park patrons and the general public. Ability to understand and follow safety procedures. Any combination of training and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the essential job functions will be considered. Be at least eighteen (18) years of age. Must be available to work varying schedules including days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Must have a valid driver's license. Must have and maintain a good driving record. Working Conditions: The work environment is typically out of doors where the employee must do work that is sometimes strenuous in all kinds of weather (e.g., high or low temperatures, fog, direct sunlight, wind) and in dirt and dust. Work is to be performed at above, or below floor or ground level. Work is also performed indoors in spaces that are adequately heated and lighted. The employee often handles unsanitary material and performs hazardous operations requiring personal protective equipment. The employee may be required to drive a vehicle. Noise from mowers, and other equipment is frequent. This work involves frequent exposure to extreme temperatures and weather conditions. Temperatures can range from -40 degrees to 85 degrees. Employee may be exposed to significant levels of noise within the Parks, Campgrounds and in the Soldotna Sports Center wherein the use of chemicals such as Freon, ethylene glycol, liquefied propane gas and urea is common. Personal protective equipment is provided and must be used in accordance with best practices, federal and state laws, and City/Department policies and operating procedures. Employee must be able to work an irregular work schedule at varied locations, as necessary. Physical Demands: This position requires a moderate level of physical ability including vision, hearing, speaking, flexibility, and strength. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to climb ladders and stairs; is required to perform general duties that may include, but not be limited to, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing, pulling, reaching, dragging, and carrying; is required to use hands and fingers dexterously to operate power equipment and gardening implements (including power mowers, weed trimmers, shovels, rakes, etc.); is required to exert (often lifting) up to 50 pounds of force frequently and in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally. The employee will be regularly required to stand and walk for extended periods of time and work in bent/hunched positions on the ground. Specific vision requirements include close, distance, color and peripheral vision, the ability to adjust focus, and the ability to judge distances and spatial relationships. The employee must be able to hear and to talk and communicate verbally in person.
