Data Center Engineer

Purpose of the Role: Working within Pico's and Pico's clients' various Data Centers in Chicago/Aurora with some travel to NJ/NY, Mexico and Canada, the role holder will be responsible for the physical build and maintenance of our environment. Working closely with our Network and Systems engineering teams and our Project Management and client Service Delivery functions to ensure prompt delivery of all projects. With a structured approach, strong team ethos and the flexibility and commitment to solve problems and get things done, the role holder will be a key member of this small but highly skilled and integral team. A key requirement of this job is flexibility as the role holder will be expected to work in shortchange windows, late at night and out of hours. Responsibilities and Duties: This includes, but is not limited to the following services: Equipment Rack and Stack Cable, Label & terminate fiber or copper network cabling Assist with the diagnosis of hardware and software - troubleshooting Perform cabinet/cage audits Blade/Card, Memory, Hard Drive, and Transceiver installations or removal Testing and troubleshooting of copper and fiber optic circuits Perform migrations of equipment, power, or networking devices Shipping and receiving packages in Office and co-locations Receive, log, and store internal packages Arrange access for internal and external customers Order, receive, install, and test cross connects (copper/fiber) Provide timely updates using a computer-based ticketing system Perform and document inventory verification/counts and rack elevation Monitor and report on power utilization in co-locations Maintain overall Data Centre cleanliness and appearance Work flexible shift schedules including rotational on-call coverage Report to the facility within a 1 hour average for emergency outage assistance We operate many data centers across EMEA, the candidate may be required to travel throughout Europe, sometimes on very short notice, particularly in the short term. Home base will be the Chicago area Education, Skills and Background: 3+ years of experience in Telecommunications or Data Centre related field In depth knowledge of Telecom structured cabling standards In depth knowledge of network device / server deployment In depth knowledge of DCO standards and operations Eligibility to work in Germany and Europe 3+ years use of industry standard test equipment Effective organizational skills and high attention to detail Building Management System and Branch Circuit Monitoring experience Strong troubleshooting skills Professional business communication and interpersonal skills Mission Critical Data Centre Facility Maintenance Working Arrangements: This is a non-office-based position. Travel between data centers in Chicago and Aurora (and occasionally beyond) will be required on an on-going basis. Home base is Chicago, where we operate out of Equinix CH4, the travel is primarily within AMRS. The role holder will be expected to work whatever hours are necessary for the performance of this role (recognizing that it involves multiple jurisdictions / geographies including but not limited to EMEA, USA and APAC). The working days for this role are Tuesday to Saturday: Tuesday to Friday 4 PM to midnight and Sat 9 AM to 5 PM. Sunday availability on request. Other Important Information: Physical demands of the position include: Lift and handle up to 50 pounds Bend, stoop, and stretch as required for placement and retrieval of network devices, materials, or equipment Work under a raised data center floor Climb ladders (up to a16 feet) to reach plenum spaces Important Data Privacy Information: This position is available with Pico Services Inc.
