The City of Melbourne is offering a part-time position with a salary of $13.00 hourly. This role is located in Melbourne, FL, and is under the Melbourne Police Department - Police Support Services. The position is part-time, approximately 10 hours per week, and the closing date is continuous. Requirements: High school diploma or GED preferred. Past school crossing experience or other work with school-age children preferred. Past experience in traffic direction/control and/or other experience with a law enforcement agency preferred. Must meet all requirements as prescribed by the Department. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of laws pertaining to pedestrian and traffic movement. Knowledge of basic traffic signal operation. Knowledge of basic traffic control principles. Ability to work with a degree of independence. Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies, and to execute duties firmly, tactfully, and impartially. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, law enforcement officers, and the general public. Physical and Mental Requirements: Observe children approaching crossing. Observe the traffic and crosswalk signal. Clearly speak the English language and be able to inform children when to cross street. Hear spoken words clearly. Observe motorists and make sure they observe the school crossing guard. Grasp stop sign and hold overhead. Walk into street for visibility to motorists. Stand for extended periods of time, up to two and one-half hours. Step up and down 6" curb. Work outside in all weather conditions and elements. Know when traffic signal is red, yellow, or green. Push by hand pedestrian button.
