Street Worker II Job
Street Worker II is a full-time mid-level skill position in the Street Worker class series with responsibility to perform a wide variety of maintenance, repair, and construction assignments with general supervision. Under the general supervision of the Lead Streets Worker and General Services Superintendent, to perform a variety of unskilled and semiskilled work assignments in the maintenance, repair, and construction of City streets and storm drains; to learn basic equipment operation assignments; and to do related work as required. Work is typically performed outdoors and may involve work in extreme weather. Work assignments may include heavy physical and manual labor. Installs, repairs, and maintains streets and storm drains; may be assigned to maintenance and repair work on water distribution systems, sewage collection systems, and other public works facilities; stripes pavement; installs and repairs street signs; installs and maintains catch basins; patches streets and reconstructs alleys; performs resurfacing projects; performs brush clearing, mowing, and other grounds maintenance work; clears streams and drainage ditches; may operate hydro cleaning and sewage system maintenance equipment; Operate bucket truck for traffic signal maintenance and maintains street light utilities; drives dump trucks and street sweeper; learns a variety of basic equipment operation work; uses hand and power tools; performs heavy physical and manual labor; performs traffic control; operates vehicles and equipment. Safe work practices Methods, materials, and practices used in the City's public works maintenance and construction activities. Principles of operation and maintenance of motorized street equipment. Geography of the City and the location of its streets. Uses and purposes of hand tools. Establish and maintain effective working relationships. Communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language. Understand and follow oral and/or written instructions, policies and procedures. Prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations. Operate or quickly learn to operate a personal computer using software applications appropriate to assigned tasks; as applicable. Use logical thinking and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written directions or oral instructions. Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under pressure of deadlines and changing priorities. Quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology. Act with integrity, ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks. Perform unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled public works maintenance and construction assignments. High School diploma or GED required. Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the requisite knowledge and abilities would be one (1) year of work experience such as would be done by a Streets Worker I, working for the City of Fortuna. Benefits
Retirement: The City is a member of the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). The City currently has 3 tiers of PERS retirement. The 1st tier (Classic PERS Members) applies to members employed by the City of Fortuna prior to March 1, 2012, receive 2.7% at 55, (three highest years) with a 7% employee contribution rate. The 2nd tier applies to current employees hired after March 1, 2012 and previous (Classic) PERS members with a break in PERS service of less than 6 months hired after January 1, 2013. Tier 2 Classic PERS Members receive 2% at 55, (three highest years) with a 7% employee contribution rate. The 3rd tier is the state mandated retirement formula effective January 1, 2013, which applies to New PERS Members, referred to as PEPRA, and previous members with a break in service greater than 6 months. Tier 3 PEPRA Members receive 2% at 62, (three highest years) with a 6.75% employee contribution rate. For the 2% at 62 formula (PEPRA) the employee contribution will change each fiscal year to be at least 50% of the normal cost rate as determined by PERS. Insurance: The City makes a substantial contribution towards medical, dental, optical and life insurance for employees and their families. Current medical coverage is through Anthem Blue Cross, vision insurance is through VSP and dental insurance is through Delta Dental. Employee and City contributions amounts may vary by fiscal year and detailed employee cost will be provided at time of hire. A variety of supplemental insurance coverages are also available through AFLAC. Employee Assistance Program: This program is provided at no cost to employees and includes counseling for family matters and substance abuse, and assistance with legal and financial issues. Deferred Compensation: The CalPERS deferred compensation plan is available to employees choosing to participate. Vacation: Employees receive two weeks after one year; three weeks after five years and four weeks after 10 years. Holidays: Thirteen paid holidays and two floating holidays annually. Sick Leave: Accrual at the rate of eight hours per month. Other Benefits: To encourage Employees to reside within 20 miles of Fortuna, a residency incentive is given to eligible employees. Children of City employees are eligible to participate in certain City-sponsored recreation activities at no cost while employee is at work, including public skating, holiday recreation programs and the Summer Fun Program.
