Cardiac Sonographer performs daily clinical operations of Echocardiography including performing Echocardiograms, entering preliminary interpretation, covering both inpatients and outpatients. May include rotating shifts and/or call coverage. Supporting the delivery of the highest quality of patient care, the primary focus will be performing Echocardiograms; using ultra sound to visualize internal cardiac structures, obtain measurements of cardiac valves, ventricles, left atrium and visualize blood flow. This will entail examinations using stationary and/or mobile equipment, while ensuring the highest standards of safety for patients. Works under the supervision of the VP of Patient Services, Director of Diagnostics, House Supervisor or designee. Major tasks, duties and responsibilities include: Demonstrating proficiency by performing routine and emergency echocardiograms, including but not limited to 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, Doppler, Trans-esophageal, and Stress Echocardiogram, as requested by physician and in accordance with standard practices. Providing echocardiography services working variable shifts, weekends, and providing emergent call coverage as scheduled. Properly storing and operating equipment necessary to perform all required procedures and to obtain optimal diagnostic recordings. Maintaining equipment in working order, making minor adjustments and repairs. Performing routine cleaning, preventive maintenance, and reporting any equipment malfunction to Director. Restocking work area as appropriate, keeping work environment neat and clean. Following hospital policies on patient identification, safety, hand hygiene, infection control practices, emergency preparedness, and compliance with annual competencies. Remaining competent in navigating the Electronic Health Record in order to analyze patients' medical record to obtain history of symptoms and necessary information for performance of diagnostic procedures. Preparing preliminary reports for review and interpretation by Cardiologist, including comparison of previous studies. Instructing patients on exams and when to obtain follow up information from their physician. Relying on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Using excellent time management skills to prioritize daily work assignment balancing new inpatient referrals with scheduled outpatient appointments. Participating in quality improvement activities; evaluating procedure results for technical quality and accuracy; maintaining appropriate logs, files, and records. Reviewing department performance in relation to established goals, implementing changes to affect outcomes. Maintaining confidentiality of patients, employees and hospital-related activities. Instructing students, nurses, or health personnel as requested. Communicating technical and patient care related information according to established processes and timelines. Attending Echo Lab Meetings, participating in and/or attending Echo related conferences, ensuring continuing education and professional growth. Cultivating a collaborative and cooperative work environment within department. Assisting the physician with Echocardiography guided studies to aid them in proceeding with complex procedures to decrease potential associated procedural risks. Acting as a resource and assisting Cardiac Sonographer students and new sonographers with pre/post procedures, preliminary review of images obtained and reports. Acting as a preceptor by on-boarding Cardiac Sonographers with departmental orientation, in-service, and education. Assisting in establishing and maintaining department objectives and goals. Supporting and recommending quality assurance initiatives. Collaborating with Director and Medical Director for review annually, or as necessary, for revision of all clinical policies and procedures specific to Echocardiography. When Echo Lab pursues accreditation ensures all ICAEL requirements are met and maintained. Staff information, CMEs, policies and procedures, protocols, etc. are updated annually to meet ICAEL requirements. Director and co-workers are updated on all ICAEL changes. Organizing and preparing ICAEL application to maintain an accredited status. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required. Assisting the Director in evaluation and selection of capital equipment. Other duties as directed. Education, training and experience: High School diploma Graduate of a cardiovascular sonography program Ultrasound registration as an RDMS or RCS required (or within 1 year of hire) RDCS Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (issued by ARDMS) RCS - Echo Registered Cardiac Sonographer (issued by CCI) Additional certification as an RVT (Registered Vascular Technician) a plus Current BLS certification (required) Excellent organization and communication skills (essential) One to two years' experience in echocardiography preferred (Stress Echo and Trans-esophageal Echocardiography experience a plus) Accepts responsibility for own acts.
