General Purpose: The purpose of the part-time Parks & Grounds Laborer position is to provide excellent park maintenance services to our municipal parks during the times of greatest demand. The highest demand is during the afternoons and evenings, leading up to dusk, and on weekends and holidays. This position is typically 29 hours per week with four (4) 6-hour shifts and one (1) shorter shift. The shifts will typically end at or near dusk. As seasonal daylight hours change, the shift end times will be adjusted accordingly. The Parks & Grounds Laborer will utilize manual labor, hand-tools, power tools, equipment and machinery to perform a variety of tasks to keep our parks clean and well-maintained. Additionally, the Park Maintenance Technician will interact with park visitors providing professional and courteous service, enforce park rules, and support the city's programs, activities and events. Some typical tasks for this position will include: Removal of trash, litter and debris Weeding, mowing, string-trimming and maintenance of turfgrass, ornamental beds, and other areas Service park restrooms, pavilions, gazebos, playgrounds, park equipment and facilities Moving, repairing and cleaning of picnic tables, benches, barbecue grills and other park amenities Performing trail maintenance such as cutting back foliage, grading, clearing obstacles, making repairs Baseball and athletic field maintenance such as mowing, dragging, painting and chalking lines Locking and unlocking gates, cabins and facilities Snow removal and salting of sidewalks during winter months Other duties as assigned. Schedule: Permanent part-time. Typically 6 hour shifts ending at sunset/dusk Must be available up to 29 hours per week The hours for this position will be targeted at the times when our parks have the most visitors which will include afternoons, evenings, weekends and holidays Preferred Qualifications: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, and Combination of education and experience which would demonstrate ability to perform the work Computer skills sufficient to send and receive e-mail, make entries into computerized work order system from a mobile device, fill out electronic forms, and open/view attachments such as schedules, training bulletins, and other communication Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time; Willingness to work outside in all types of weather. Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment, including appropriate computer skills. Ability to work safely; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, other departments and the public; Must possess proven integrity; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
