The St. Louis County Government Department of Transportation and Public Works is looking for Engineering Technicians to join their team. There are openings to work in the Materials Lab and on roadway construction projects. In the Materials Lab, the Technician will perform construction material testing in the laboratory and on construction sites and ensure materials adhere to plans, standards and regulations. The positions assigned to construction projects will perform inspections of roadway construction sites, investigate existing roads and bridges and complete field and laboratory testing to assist higher-level engineering staff. Each snow season Department employees that are required to work snow will receive a $6 per hour increase when they report for emergency snow removal services. Essential Function Examples - Materials Lab Perform laboratory and on-site construction materials testing and inspection, in accordance with approved standards like the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), using specialized test equipment. Conduct investigative core drilling of pavement. Ensure materials used in County roads and bridges comply with Federal, State, County and local regulations. Maintain appropriate American Concrete Institute (ACI) and Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) Certifications to comply with State and Federal program requirements. Resolve issues with material producers and contractors. Perform proficiency testing for MoDOT and participate in the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) onsite inspections. Monitor construction material production for adherence to plans, drawings, standards and regulations. Track and report testing and inspection of embankment placement, aggregate base and structural backfill, hot mix asphalt production and plastic concrete used on-site for road and pre-cast and cast-in-place structure construction. Operate a density testing device for determination of compaction of soil, aggregate base and hot mix asphalt. Perform other duties as assigned, including duties assigned during mandatory snow shift. Candidates should possess college level coursework in engineering and mathematics, and two years of experience in roadway construction inspection or a related field or have an equivalent combination of training and experience. Possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and an ACI Concrete Field Technician - Grade I Certification will be required within 6 months of employment. Employees will be required to obtain and maintain materials testing certifications. Initial and recertification will be scheduled and paid for by the St. Louis County Materials Laboratory.
