Requires satisfactory completion of a six-month probationary period Pay Grade: 113 Safety Sensitive: No Purpose of Job: The purpose of this job is to enforce construction codes and ordinances and perform on-site residential and commercial inspections. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, inspecting construction and reconstruction projects, maintaining files, reviewing permit applications, issuing citations, and performing additional tasks as assigned. Job Related Requirements Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. May be required to work on religious holidays. Regular and predictable attendance is required. Must work cooperatively with others. When requirements include vehicle operation, responsible for the safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by ACC's safe driving policy. Minimum Training & Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
High school diploma or equivalent and six months experience as an inspector in the construction field OR one year of construction experience to include electrical, mechanical, and/or plumbing experience required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position. Must possess, or be able to obtain International Code Council (ICC) Building, Mechanical, Electrical, or Plumbing Inspector Certification within 12 months of the date of hire. Must possess a valid driver's license. Essential Duties, Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Inspects ongoing construction and repairs or modifications for compliance with applicable codes and ordinances; inspects existing structures for violations of safety or sanitation regulations, or when adopted codes and ordinances require an inspection. Notifies contractor, subcontractor, engineer, architect or homeowner of code violations and discusses possible options to correct violations. Maintains files of inspections, re-inspections, inspector notes and required reports; compiles status reports on specific assignments, as requested. Inputs inspection reports into computer database. Issues citations for code violations. Responds to telephone inquiries from citizens, builders, contractors and public utilities related to code interpretation and enforcement. Schedules inspections to be completed each workday. Participates in professional development activities. Operates testing equipment. Provides testimony at appeal hearings and in court. Performs other related duties as required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the Building Inspections department as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Building Inspector I. Knowledge of the terminology used within the department. Knowledge of relevant unified government construction and housing codes and ordinances. Knowledge of State of Georgia construction codes that are adopted by Athens-Clarke County Unified Government. Knowledge of construction industry standards and the geography of Athens-Clarke County. Knowledge of theories, principles, and practices of commercial and residential construction; government and department policies, procedures, and methods as required in the performance of duties. Skill in detecting structural faults, assessing structures for rehabilitation purposes and in planning, organizing, analyzing, decision making, and problem solving. Skill in reading blueprints and other technical diagrams, plats, plans, soil erosion and sedimentation control plans and maps, drawings, and building plans. Skill in organizing work and dealing with the public. Ability to compile, organize, prepare, and maintain an assortment of records, reports, and information in an effective manner and according to departmental and/or governmental regulations. Ability to effectively communicate and interact with supervisors, citizens, public officials, and other staff members. Ability to use independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations. Ability to perform mathematical calculations. Ability to utilize and understand computer applications and techniques as necessary in the completion of daily assignments. Ability to plan, organize, and/or prioritize daily assignments and work activities. Ability to comprehend and apply regulations and procedures of the department.
