Job Summary
This is semi-skilled mechanical work in the operation of various types of equipment pertaining to potable water disinfection and distribution. Work is carried out within the framework of well defined procedures and supervision is received from a supervisor. An employee in this class is required to work on a shift basis. Employee will be asked to rotate between shifts. Special shift (operation of standpipe) to be included in job duties. Because the Authority has a primary responsibility to serve the public 24 hours per day, an employee in this class is expected to work overtime as conditions demand and on short notice during emergency conditions. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Keeps accurate records and completes any required forms related to the water distribution department Operates power driven pumps. Monitors control panel consisting of pressure gauges, flow rate gauges, chlorine residual meters, and other instruments related to water distribution Adds all specified amounts of chlorine and or other chemicals to disinfect water. Adjusts automatic devices which inject chemicals in controlled dosages. Regulates valves and pumps to adjust level of chlorine and pressures to predetermined levels Monitors tank levels and adjusts valves to regulate which tanks are being filled and which tanks are being used by the pumps. Makes adjustments of water flow only with a direct order from immediate supervisor Inspects equipment, reads meters, takes samples, and records necessary information Performs minor maintenance and adjustments on water plant equipment, which includes working with PVC pipes, painting of equipment and related jobs Cuts brush and maintains the appearance and safety of all work related areas and pathways Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
The proper personal protective equipment must always be worn when carrying out duties Must be able to work independently Must be available for weekend duty and overtime work as required Must have use of a home telephone or have immediate access to one Must maintain reliable transportation to the workplace Must maintain all Authority issued equipment (e.g. communication devices) Must possess a valid V.I. driver's license Education & Experience
High school diploma including courses in the mechanical trades and two year of responsible experience performing mechanical and maintenance work.
