Senior HVDC Power Electronics Engineer
As a Senior HVDC Power Electronics Engineer, you will enable the Energy Transition through the development of innovative power converters and power electronics-based equipment designs for HVDC transmission, DC grid architectures, and FACTS. You will lead and contribute to R&D programs aligned with GE Vernova's energy businesses such as Grid Solutions, Power Conversion and Storage, Wind and Power including Gas Power, Nuclear and Hydro as well as with U.S. Government Agencies such as the Department of Energy and the Department of Defense. The technologies developed under these programs will be matured and transitioned into products to drive breakthrough impact for our company, our customers, and our society. The role gives an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to innovate, expand their design skill and personal development within a globally recognized expert team in HVDC and FACTS. The role covers all scope of a HVDC converter valve development from design, to prototyping, to New Product Introduction, including other aspects of the forthcoming HVDC grid. The candidate will play a major role in technical decisions and design phases. It also involves internal interactions with other HVDC engineering functions and other GE Vernova businesses, but also external interactions with HVDC customers, 3rd party companies such as test laboratories, standard committees, universities and so on. The successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated, dynamic team of engineers working on the development of the future generation of HVDC converters and multiterminal HVDC applications. Are you ready to join our world-class team of researchers and do you have "The Energy to Change the World"? As a Senior HVDC Engineer
Power Electronics, you will: Lead diverse projects as well as contribute individually at a senior level in the development and application of advanced technology solutions to GE Vernova's HVDC and FACTS products and services using modeling, simulation, testing and optimization technologies. Validate performance of developed solutions through simulations, prototyping, and testing. Document technology and results through patent applications, technical reports, and publications. Ensure that solutions adopted are both technically appropriate and that GE Vernova has freedom to utilize these solutions. Ensure that work performed considers applicable international standards and policies. Transfer technology to engineering teams in GE Vernova to be included in next generation products and services. Stay current with advances in system technologies to seek out new ideas and applications. Work in a team environment with colleagues across GE Vernova including its Advanced Research Center, and partners from industry, academia, and government agencies. Requirements: Doctorate degree in an Engineering field with a minimum of 7 years of experience in design, development and validation of power converters. OR Master's degree in an Engineering field with a minimum of 10 years of experience in design, development and validation of power converters. 3 to 5 years experience in development of power converters of >1MVA for grid or industrial applications (e.g., HVDC converter, HVDC multiterminal scheme, Wind/Solar converter, STATCOM, SVC, Rectifiers, Filters, Drives, etc) 3 to 5 years experience in MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, and PSCAD-EMTDC Ability and willingness to travel 10% of the time, including international, and must comply with all relevant company travel and tax policies. Desired: Deep understanding of Voltage-Sourced Converter (VSC) HVDC schemes. Some knowledge of LCC (Line Commutated Converter) would also be advantageous. At converter valve level, have wide design experience for electrical components inside converter valves including auxiliary circuits (gate drives, bypass switch, and protection elements). Depth and/or breadth of knowledge of power electronics devices and power converter topologies including voltage sourced converters and current source converters. Deep understanding of power semiconductors devices, their control, packaging, and thermal management. Have extensive electrical, power electronics and thermal experience in designing Voltage-Sourced Converters (VSC) or Line-Commutated Converters (LCC). Have wide experience for power converters and modules testing. Proactive interaction with other engineering departments for product definition (System design, Firmware, PCB electronics, Controllers, Main Scheme, Layout, Commercial). Be familiar with HVDC protection requirements. Experience interacting with customers and regulatory stakeholders (e.g. TSO's, developers, government agencies). Strong communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with senior leadership. Experience with program management, which includes setting up schedules, milestones, technical reviews, tracking funding, etc. Demonstrated ability to take an innovative idea from a concept to a product. GE Vernova offers a great work environment, professional development, challenging careers, and competitive compensation. GE Vernova is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
