Repatriation Fellow
This paid one-year fellowship is designed to provide a student, with lived Native American cultural experience and an interest in a career in repatriation, with an opportunity to work directly with the Center for Repatriation, Tribal Relations, and Provenance Research at the Field Museum in Chicago, Illinois. The Fellow will learn about and experience all stages of the repatriation process, including consultation with Native American Tribes and other cultural groups, collections-based research, facilitating repatriation requests, and coordinating physical returns of human remains and cultural items. The Fellow will work on-site in collaboration primarily with repatriation staff and descendant communities, but also with other staff in Collections, Conservation, and Research. Additionally, the Fellow will be provided mentorship on pursuing a career in repatriation. Successful candidates will gain both practical and theoretical knowledge of current best practices in repatriation and will help fulfill the Museum's ethical and legal obligations to repatriate human remains and cultural items to descendant communities. Duties and Responsibilities: Assisting with research into and responding to inquiries about the collections Use of Collections Management database system (EMu) Written and photographic documentation Assisting with consultations with Native American Tribes and other cultural groups, both onsite and virtually Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Anthropology or a related field Demonstrated experience working with Native American communities or applying Native American traditional knowledge and ethical care principles Excellent verbal and written communication skills Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities, tasks, and deadlines Ability to maintain confidentiality when working with sensitive information Ability to work alone or in a team situation Supervision Received: Receives general supervision by NAGPRA Director Supervision Exercised: The position has no direct supervisory responsibilities. Work Hours and Shift: Monday-Friday, 8:30 am- 4:30 pm Hybrid Eligibility: Eligible Location: 1400 S DuSable Lake Shore Drive Chicago, IL 60605 Union Representation: This position is represented by Field Museum Workers' United, AFSCME Council 31, AFL-CIO.
