This is semi-skilled work performing minor to moderately complex repairs and maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment. Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated supervisor and work under direct supervision and work is reviewed through inspection of work upon completion. Work in this class is distinguished from other classes by its technical nature and emphasis on minor to moderately complex repairs and maintenance of vehicles and equipment. Examples of work include: Maintaining gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, air conditioning, electrical, and other automotive systems in accordance with manufacturers recommendations and requirements and departmental procedures. Providing roadside assistance and emergency repairs outside of garage. Providing preventive maintenance and fueling services in the field. Performing road tests and operational checks of vehicles and equipment before and after repairs, modifications, and service. Ensuring proper preventive maintenance service is performed in accordance with manufacturers recommendations and requirements. Ensuring tools, equipment and garage area are clean and orderly maintained. Entering maintenance data into the Fleet Management Information System. Creating and completing work orders. Entering notes and comments. Requesting parts as required. Attending work on a continuous and regular basis. Non-essential job functions include: Operating a fuel/lube/service or tow truck. Delivering motor vehicles to dealerships/vendors for specialized maintenance and warranty repairs. Shaping, designing, and welding equipment and materials on occasion. Attending training seminars as needed. Performing other related duties as assigned. Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job function satisfactorily. Below are the required education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions. Education and experience: Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma, supplemented by automotive technology or diesel mechanic technical courses by an accredited vocational-technical institution, and three (3) years of experience repairing motor vehicles and/or equipment. Desire work experience with municipal and utilities fleet vehicles and equipment, including public safety (police and fire). Additional Requirements: Must supply and maintain own tools as specified. Certifications or Licenses: Valid State of Florida Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) instructional permit required at time of appointment. Valid State of Florida Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with tanker and hazardous materials endorsements required within six (6) months from date of appointment. Technicians must be certified in an approved refrigerant recovery and recycling certification program by Mobile Air Conditioning Society (MACS) or the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) AND Certificates by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification in automotive/light truck or medium/heavy truck repair and maintenance highly desired. Knowledge, skills, and abilities: Knowledge of the techniques and methods used in the repair and maintenance of light duty vehicles and equipment. Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in the servicing of vehicles and equipment. Knowledge of the basic theory, operation, and maintenance of internal combustion engines, transmissions, carburetors, fuel injection and other automotive systems. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of vehicle maintenance and repair. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and other technology software/tools used in fleet management. Skill in using diagnostic equipment. Ability to install and operate diagnostic equipment and tools. Ability to analyze data received from diagnostic equipment. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to complete accurate work orders and parts requests. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public. Physical and environmental requirements: Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to sit for prolonged periods of time. May occasionally lift objects up to 75 pounds. May occasionally crawl, stand, walk, sit, listen, talk, use hands, drive, bend, climb, squat, push/pull while seated or standing, and reach above shoulder level. Work Environment: The work environment involves moderate risks or discomforts associated with vehicle/equipment maintenance. These include working in extreme temperatures, working around potentially dangerous equipment, moving parts, carts or machines, working around grease and oil, and so forth. May be exposed to a variety of irritant chemicals, lubricants, and exhaust fumes. May be required to use protective clothing or gear as necessary to minimize risks of personal injury.
