Firefighter Position

This is a part-time, non-union position. Job Responsibilities: Responds to fire and medical emergency situations; provides emergency medical care and fire suppression services; assists with fire prevention in the fire district. Responds to HAZMAT incidents. Maintains department vehicle and equipment readiness and maintenance, assists with department cleanliness and maintenance. Assists with fire inspections and re-inspections of buildings and businesses. Maintains a level of physical fitness to safely perform emergency rescue, medical care and fire suppression responsibilities. Operates fire apparatus or other vehicles in an emergency mode with emergency lights and sirens. Performs firefighting tasks (e.g. hoseline operations, extensive crawling, lifting carrying heavy objects, ventilating roofs or walls using power or hand tools, forcible entry), rescue operations, and other emergency response actions under stressful conditions while wearing personal protective ensembles (PPE) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), including working in extremely hot or cold environments for prolonged time periods. Climbs ladders or stairs while wearing fire protective gear and carrying equipment/tools. Searching, finding, and rescue - dragging or carrying victims to safety despite hazardous conditions and low visibility. Advancing water-filled hose lines from fire apparatus to occupancy; can involve negotiating multiple flights of stairs, ladders, and other obstacles. Operating from heights, walking or crawling in the dark along narrow and uneven surfaces, and operating in proximity to electrical power lines and/or other hazards. Critical, time-sensitive, complex problem solving during physical exertion in stressful, hazardous environments (including hot, dark, tightly enclosed spaces), further aggravated by fatigue, flashing lights, sirens, and other distractions. Ability to communicate, give and comprehend verbal orders while wearing PPE and SCBA under conditions of high background noise, poor visibility, and drenching from hose lines and/or fixed protection systems (sprinklers). Functioning as part of a team. Must be able to locate addresses. Training - skills maintenance and acquisition, physical fitness. May attend community events to provide safety services and community outreach. Regular and punctual attendance. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications: High School diploma or general education degree (GED) and two (2) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be 18 years of age at time of appointment. Must possess and maintain valid Full-time Firefighter card (PFF or 1-C), minimum of an EMT-Paramedic Certification. Ohio Fire Safety Inspector Certification must be obtained within two (2) years of appointment, HAZMAT Training as required. Must train in Incident Command and Emergency Vehicle Driving. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction, general business periodicals, professional journals and technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to recognize potentially unsafe conditions and behaviors and correct them in a positive and appropriate manner. Must be knowledgeable in the local and State of Ohio laws for Fire Prevention. Ability to input, access and retrieve information from department computers and electronic devices. Must be able to operate all equipment and vehicles of the department. Must possess a valid State of Ohio driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Must be eligible to work in the United States. Working Conditions: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions, The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation, and vibration. The employee will be exposed to bright, flashing lights and sirens. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, walk, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste and smell. The employee will frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
