Overnight Library Specialist I (Multiple Openings)

The University Libraries are seeking multiple Overnight Library Specialist I to join our team in supporting our West Campus Library and our Evans Library. As the primary point of contact at the front desk, you'll be the go-to person for all our patrons, providing crucial customer service and helping access the resources they need. From checking out books and Chromebooks to assisting with general inquiries, your communication and problem-solving skills will be essential. Beyond assisting with research and library operations, you'll play a key part in ensuring a welcoming and comfortable environment. This includes conducting walkthroughs of public areas to identify potential safety concerns, ensuring study spaces are being used respectfully and appropriately, and monitoring for things like improperly used outlets. A security guard is onsite for additional support. You'll also submit maintenance requests, straighten public areas, and step in to support other service desks across campus as needed. Your keen attention will help maintain the library's welcoming atmosphere, and in case of emergencies such as fire alarms, you'll step in as the point person to guide evacuations and make sure everyone knows where to go. Opportunities to Contribute: Provides basic front desk coverage and assists with general library operations during late evening and overnight hours at West Campus Library and Evans/Annex AskUs service desks. Assists patrons with accessing library resources, answers questions, conducts information interviews, gives directional assistance, explains library guidelines and the availability of resources, and refers users to supervisors or other service desks as needed. Uses the library computer system to check materials in and out (books, laptops, audiovisual/course reserve items), and utilizes the online catalog and website to direct users to needed materials or services. Demonstrates basic conflict resolution skills and enforces food, drink, and noise guidelines. Collaborates with library staff across all shifts, participates in decision-making, attends meetings and trainings, and supports quality work life initiatives. Monitors building safety and security by conducting rounds, monitoring the front doors and public areas, straightening spaces, and ensuring proper use of facilities during overnight hours. Responds to emergencies, disruptions, and alarms; documents incidents, acts as a proctor during emergencies, facilitates safe evacuations, may implement the call tree, and performs post-event checks. Assigns tasks to student employees, oversees re-shelving activities, and processes/files library materials. Provides backup support to other library desks across campus as needed, including extended hours or staff shortages. Salary: $15.85 an hour Hours: Must be available to work Sunday through Thursday, from 6:45 pm to 3:15 am. Please note that during periods of expanded service, the overnight schedule may shift to later hours. Flexibility is required to occasionally adjust your schedule for extended hours, emergency coverage, or to work early evenings and daytime shifts during breaks between academic semesters. Location: Onsite position in College Station, Texas. Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience. One year of related library, customer service or office experience. Ability to move medium weight boxes, books, heavy book truck or similar items. Ability to handle material which can contain dust or microscopic mold spores. A well-qualified candidate will also possess: Prior experience in an academic library. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Knowledge of email, word processing, spreadsheet applications and internet searches. Good interpersonal skills. Reliable attendance.
