Job Summary Develop programs to control machining or processing of metal parts by automatic machine tools, equipment, or systems. Principal Responsibilities Determine the sequence of machine operations and select proper cutting tools to shape workpieces. Revise programs or tapes to eliminate errors and retest to ensure problems are resolved. Analyze job orders, drawings, blueprints, specifications, and design data to calculate dimensions, tool selection, machine speeds, and feed rates. Determine reference points, machine cutting paths, or hole locations, and compute angular and linear dimensions, radii, and curvatures. Observe machines on trial runs or conduct computer simulations to ensure proper functioning and compliance with specifications. Compare programs or printouts with original part specifications and blueprints to verify accuracy. Write programs in machine controller language or CAM systems and store on network drives. Modify existing programs to improve efficiency. Transfer data to other media as needed. Additional Responsibilities Other duties may be assigned as needed. Minimum Requirements Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications. Knowledge of machines and tools, including design, use, repair, and maintenance. Understanding of engineering principles and technology in manufacturing. Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, and cost management. Programming skills for CNC equipment, including G&M codes and CAM programming. Ability to solve complex problems and make sound decisions considering costs and benefits. Proficiency in AutoCAD or SolidWorks for drawing and manufacturing prints. Experience Requirements Prior experience as a Machinist or Programmer, control-based programming, CAM, CAD, 2D and solid modeling. Environmental Requirements Work schedule typically 40 hours/week, may include on-call, evenings, or weekends. Ability to lift/maneuver 50 lbs. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
